From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.England's faltering World Cup campaign veered further off track as old rivals Australia booked their place in the semi-finals with a 64-run victory at Lord's.
After misadventures against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, England ran aground when chasing for the third time in the tournament, dismissed for an error-strewn 221.
With India and New Zealand still to play, there is now minimal leeway if the world's number one side are to reach the semi-finals of their own competition.
30.3 - England 141-5, B Stokes 70, C Woakes 1, G Maxwell 0-15 (1.3)
Swept in front of square and that's six more!
Nowhere near as big, just 62m, in fact, but wide of the man at deep midwicket, and two yards over the boundary rope!
31.0 - England 141-5, B Stokes 70, C Woakes 1, G Maxwell 0-15 (2)
Signs of the engine kicking into action for Ben Stokes with Jos Buttler gone. A flurry of boundaries could put the cat back among the Australian pigeons.
The fluids are again trotted out as the players take drinks.
32.0 - England 154-5, B Stokes 72, C Woakes 3, M Stoinis 1-29 (7)
He's still rather uncomfortable, Stokes, grunting and gurning after every trotted single. It's absurdly humid today and it sounds like he may well have cramped up.
Four singles.
33.0 - England 147-5, B Stokes 73, C Woakes 4, N Lyon 0-30 (7)
Something very Frankenstein's monster about the way Stokes is moving between the wickets at the moment, seemingly having to grasp hold of a pocket or loose bit of cloth to haul his leg along with him.
A reverse sweep finds the fielder at 45. No run. Tight from Lyon.
Stoinis will have a blow. Pat Cummins is back on for his sixth over.
34.0 - England 156-5, B Stokes 77, C Woakes 9, P Cummins 0-23 (6)
Classy! A gentle drive between the two men straight-ish on the onside for four from Chris Woakes, timed absolutely perfectly.
Stokes then finds the same gap in rather contrasting fashion, a fierce pull of a short ball coming off the underside of the bat but carrying just enough pace to beat the dive of the mid-on fielder.
35.0 - England 160-5, B Stokes 79, C Woakes 11, N Lyon 0-34 (8)
15 overs to go as Nathan Lyon completes another solid six balls. 8.4 an over needed. Doable, but tough with just the five wickets in hand.
35.1 - England 164-5, B Stokes 83, C Woakes 11, P Cummins 0-27 (6.1)
An authoritative swat through point for four!
Stokes has had such clarity coming down the pitch to the seamers today and isn't at all perturbed by Cummins' pace, meeting the ball on the rise and beating the man at deep cover.
