Yellow warnings for snow and ice were in place across parts of the UK, with overnight temperatures falling to almost -13C in Scotland.
The Met Office warned that road and rail journeys could be disrupted due to the cold weather. Flights were also affected as airports struggled to clear snow.
Further snow and ice are expected.
The Met Office weather warning for the South West now runs from 1pm on Thursday through to 9pm on Friday.
Areas including Gloucestershire could see snow falling for nine hours straight, with up to 10cm accumulating in some places.
Manchester Airport has reopened one of its runways for departing and arriving flights.
It follows the airport's decision to close both runways earlier this morning while heavy snow was cleared.
Arrivals have had to be diverted to other UK airports in the meantime.
Tonight is likely be the coldest night of winter, with temperatures as low as -14C predicted in rural parts of Aberdeenshire in Scotland.
Simon Calder, The Independent's travel correspondent, shared a chilly picture from London Heathrow this morning as he makes his way to Boston, where temperatures are set to drop to as low as -12C.
A UK driver shared a handy hack to de-ice a car windshield using just a sandwich bag and some hot water.
Daniel Harris shared the tip on Facebook, saying: “Hot water in a food bag and bam you’ve got a de icer and a hand warmer. Works a treat, and it’s fast!”
The post has since gone viral, with 2.4 million views.
Wales has been one of the hardest hit places by the snow, with reports from Welshpool that there is "no bin collection, no post, nobody!"
Northern Rail has updated its travel advice.
It says: "Severe weather across the North West is causing disruption to Northern services on some routes.
"At present the following areas are experiencing difficulties: Deansgate Junction - points issues mean we are experiencing some delays and cancellations to services running between Cheshire and Manchester."
Travel disruption caused by the snow is prompting some people on social media to question why the UK struggles so much in inclement weather.
"Why does the UK struggle so much with such a small amount of snow and ice every single year," tweeted Alison Waltham.
"Actually unbelievable how much Uber prices have gone up cos of the weather, why does the UK go into meltdown after the tiniest bit of snow," said Liv.
Meanwhile, Canadian Jim Elder wrote: "Cry me a river, UK. This is the view from my porch in Toronto. Fairly typical for this time of year."
