From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Bitterly cold temperatures are swept the UK on Friday, alongside heavy snowfall, ice and freezing fog, particularly in western England.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice were in place across parts of the UK, with overnight temperatures falling to almost -13C in Scotland.

The Met Office warned that road and rail journeys could be disrupted due to the cold weather. Flights were also affected as airports struggled to clear snow.

Further snow and ice are expected.

Manchester airport has closed its runways.

It said in a statement: "As conditions significantly worsened this morning, we took the decision to temporarily close our runways.

"We continue to work to mitigate the challenging conditions and hope to minimise further impacts.

"However, the safety of our customer and staff is our number one concern and there is likely to be some disruption this morning."

Multiple crashes blocked a section of the A55 in North Wales last night after heavy snow caused treacherous conditions on the roads.

Two collisions were reported on the westbound carriageway between Junction 33B and Junction 33.

A third accident was reported in the same direction at Junction 31.

North Wales Police tweeted: “Please be aware the weather conditions on the A55 between Holywell and Northop are worsening and road conditions are becoming dangerous. Please drive carefully.”

The Met Office has issued advice for cycling in ice and snow:

"Snow and ice will severely impact your travel plans including your commute to and from work and getting around your community and local area. Alternative travel plans may provide a safer form of travel.

"Cycling accidents on ice can often result in physical injury, so learning to read the weather signs and identify potential danger spots on your journey is essential."

Cycling charity Sustrans recommends sticking to busier main roads when cycling in cold conditions: "Quiet roads that are good to ride on in fair weather are more prone to freezing, particularly early in the morning and bends can be very difficult if icy.

"Sometimes a gritted busier road is better than an icy quiet road."
