Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal face off before UFC 272 main event

Bragging rights went to Colby Covington on Saturday night as he defeated friend-turned-rival Jorge Masvidal in a seismic grudge match in the main event of UFC 272.

Allegations of unpaid coaching fees, debts to loan sharks, poor parenting and more dominated the back and forths between the former roommates and training partners, leading to their clash in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the first two rounds, Covington was warned over an eye poke and lost a position due to a low blow, and he also survived a scare later in the fight after being dropped by an overhand right from Masvidal.

The wrestling specialist dominated the majority of the contest, however, taking down his rival numerous times and seeking chokes against the fence throughout. Covington ultimately secured a unanimous-decision win (49-46, 50-44, 50-45) and proceeded to call out another former teammate in Dustin Poirier, who has teased a move up from lightweight. “I just took care of Miami street trash, now it’s time to take care of Louisiana swamp trash,” Covington said, a US flag draped around his shoulders. “Where you at, Dustin Poirier? You said it’s ‘on sight’. I’ll see you soon, you’re next.”

So, one judge had Nzechukwu winning all three rounds.

The other two judges had Negumereanu winning two of the three rounds.

Then you factor in the point deduction against Nzechukwu, though it did not change the result for any of the judges – i.e. it did not change the result from a win to a draw in any of their eyes.

It’s taking a while for the judges’ scorecards to come in. Not a surprise.

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 3

Big right straights from Negumereanu!

It’s so hard to say how this one will be scored... It was arguably 19-19 – one round apiece – before this close third frame, in which Nzechukwu has been docked a point and been taken down but also landed some great punches and knees.

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 3

Negumereanu will continue, though he’s wincing a lot here... A point is taken from Nzechukwu.

Nzechukwu catches Negumereanu with a huge knee as the Romanian tries for a takedown, but Negumereanu somehow eats it!

The same thing happens again, but this time Negumereanu also secures the takedown!

Nzechukwu is back on his feet but is being controlled against the cage wall...

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 3

“You’ve got to let your hands go nuts. This is a close fight, because you’ve let him in,” Nzechukwu is told by his coach.

“When you let your hands go, you’re crushing him. Do you want to go home a winner? You’ve got to push.”

He also tells Nzechukwu to “control what you can control” after his fighter says Negumereanu has been illegally grabbing the cage at points.

Early in Round 3, we have another pause in the action for another eye poke by Nzechukwu as Negumereanu enters an exchange.

Negumereanu might not be able to continue...

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 2

Referee Mark Smith separates the fighters, and they’re back in the open.

Nice combination up top from Nzechukwu! The Romanian fires back with straight punches.

Slick left straight from southpaw Nzechukwu, whose has bloodied Negumereanu’s nose.

Negumereanu keeps touching it. It might be broken.

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 2

Nice counter jab by Nzechukwu, who nearly catches Negumereanu with a knee as the Romanian shoots for a double-leg takedown.

Negumereanu backs up Nzechukwu to the fence and throws some knees to the knee of his opponent.

Some boos begin to cascade from the crowd, and the referee warns the men that they need to “work”.

Negumereanu has Nzechukwu down, but the Nigerian rises before long. More boos as they stand against the fence again.

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 1

Negumereanu is landing that right straight with increasing frequency on his southpaw opponent.

A good end to the round for the Romanian!

“This is not what we planned,” Nzechukwu’s coach tells him, also advising him to stop backing up in a straight line and stop waving his hands around – a sort of semi-feint that the Nigerian had been using.
