Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal face off before UFC 272 main event

Bragging rights went to Colby Covington on Saturday night as he defeated friend-turned-rival Jorge Masvidal in a seismic grudge match in the main event of UFC 272.

Allegations of unpaid coaching fees, debts to loan sharks, poor parenting and more dominated the back and forths between the former roommates and training partners, leading to their clash in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the first two rounds, Covington was warned over an eye poke and lost a position due to a low blow, and he also survived a scare later in the fight after being dropped by an overhand right from Masvidal.

The wrestling specialist dominated the majority of the contest, however, taking down his rival numerous times and seeking chokes against the fence throughout. Covington ultimately secured a unanimous-decision win (49-46, 50-44, 50-45) and proceeded to call out another former teammate in Dustin Poirier, who has teased a move up from lightweight. “I just took care of Miami street trash, now it’s time to take care of Louisiana swamp trash,” Covington said, a US flag draped around his shoulders. “Where you at, Dustin Poirier? You said it’s ‘on sight’. I’ll see you soon, you’re next.”

Negumereanu vs Nzechukwu – Round 1

Nzechukwu has a clear height and reach advantage and uses it to catch Negumereanu on the end of a long jab. And another.

Negumereanu with a couple of low kicks, then a right straight as he covers a lot of ground with a swift entry!

Another sharp jab from Nzechukwu. Another quick right hand from Negumereanu, though!

Once again Nzechukwu lands a jab, and his team call on him to add more punches thereafter. Front kick to the body by Nzechukwu as he backs up Negumereanu.

We have a brief pause in the action for an accidental eye poke by Nzechukwu, who has already been warned several times by the referee for having his fingers extended.

Negumereanu with another one of those right hands, then an inside low kick, and the opponents trade front kicks to the body.

Maryna Moroz def. Mariya Agapova via second-round submission (arm-triangle choke, 3:27).

Moroz, the only Ukrainian woman on the UFC roster, with a dominant display and fine victory!

She and Agapova, former teammates who are now bitter rivals, exchange kind words after the fight, it seems.

“My country has a war right now, I’m worried because my family right now are in bad situations,” Moroz says. “Thank you for everyone who messaged me. I want to cry. Thank you everyone!”
