From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams and Kyle Edmund headline the opening day of Wimbledon 2019.

2018 men's champion Djokovic begins his defence against unseeded Philipp Kohlschreiber before women's number two seed Naomi Osaka takes on Yuila Putintseva and Kyle Edmund wraps up the first day on Centre Court against Jaume Munar.

Last year's men's finalist Kevin Anderson begins his campaign on Monday, as does Stan Warwrinka, Alexander Zverev, Simona Halep and Venus Williams, who plays 15-year-old Cori Gauff.

Novak Djokovic 6-3 7-5 2-2 Philipp Kohlschreiber*

The reigning champ holds easily enough as he continues to breeze towards what looks to be a straight-sets win.

*Novak Djokovic 6-3 7-5 2-2 Philipp Kohlschreiber

It's been relatively plain-sailing for Djokovic today but he's been a little guilty of rushing some of his shots. He's just fired wide a simple backhand which he definitely should have made. 15-15.

Samuel Lovett1 July 2019 14:51

Simona Halep 6-4 7-5 Aliaksandra Sasnovich

Halep is through to the second round after beating Sasnovich in straight sets. Her opponent had set point in the second but the 2018 French Open champion held her nerve before turning things around to secure victory. She'll be pleased with the spirit and resolve she showed there.

Novak Djokovic 6-3 7-5 2-2 Philipp Kohlschreiber*

Djokovic, on break point, places a forehand in the tramlines but makes the challenge anyway. Surprise surprise, it's well wide. 40-40. The German holding on here...

Djokovic nets. Kohlschreiber advantage. Djokovic pulls it wide. Kohlschreiber holds.

Huge relief for the German there. On we go.

Third seed Karolina Pliskova had to save three set points in the second set against China's Zhu Lin before coming through 6-2 7-6 (4).

Pliskova is among the big favourites to win the title and arrived at the All England Club having blitzed the field to lift the trophy at Eastbourne on Saturday.

But she was not at her best against Zhu, who has never won a grand slam match, and the Chinese player held set point three times serving at 6-5. Pliskova managed to break, though, and came out on top in the tie-break.

Novak Djokovic 6-3 7-5 3-3 Philipp Kohlschreiber*

Djokovic holds comfortably to 15, and seals it with a crunching backhand winner down the line.

Three apiece.

Last year's French Open champion Simona Halep is safely through to round two...

SHOCK ALERT!

Rybarikova reached the semi-finals in 2017, and has knocked out no.10 seed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets!

DJOKOVIC BREAKS!

A wayward forehand volley from the German while two break points down, and the finish line is now in sight for four-time champion Djokovic.
