Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams and Kyle Edmund headline the opening day of Wimbledon 2019.

2018 men's champion Djokovic begins his defence against unseeded Philipp Kohlschreiber before women's number two seed Naomi Osaka takes on Yuila Putintseva and Kyle Edmund wraps up the first day on Centre Court against Jaume Munar.

Last year's men's finalist Kevin Anderson begins his campaign on Monday, as does Stan Warwrinka, Alexander Zverev, Simona Halep and Venus Williams, who plays 15-year-old Cori Gauff.

Venus Williams, speaking in her post-match press conference:

Is it any consolation that you lost to a potential future champion?

"I never thought of that..."

"She played so well, even all the shanks went in. I actually didn't play well - it was a contrast."

"I just said to her well done and good luck! The sky's the limit [for her]"

"She did everything well today, she was much better. Moves well, serves well, good match!"

"What's next for me? I guess the US Open series."

An understandably downbeat Venus Williams in her press conference...
