What is the Grand National 2023 and when is it?

Corach Rambler won the 2023 Grand National at Aintree backing up its status as the 8/1 favourite.

Mister Coffey and Coko Beach led early on and throughout most of the thrilling race. But chaotic scenes early on saw a number of fallers, including Lifetime Ambition, who was taken out by a loose horse at fence 9.

However, Corach Rambler, ridden by Derek Fox and trained by Lucinda Russell took the lead from Mister Coffey over the final fence and kicked for home to record a memorable win.

The race had been delayed after protestors breached the Aintree racecourse fence and got on to the course. The Grand National attracted criticism from animal rights protestors in the build-up, with three arrests made in connection with potential co-ordinated disruption activities at Aintree, which became nine following the pre-race disruption

Relive all the action from Aintree below:

A look at all 40 runners: No. 35 - Francky Du Berlais

Form: 20005R / Official Rating: 141 / Weight: 10st / Age: 10 / Jockey: Ben Jones / Trainer: Peter Bowen

Might have held on for third in the Cross-Country last time if he hadn’t jinked at the last and unseated Ben Jones. Was 15th in the Becher Chase over these fences in December and fourth in the Topham Chase at this meeting 12 months ago.

Only 10st is a big bonus and we know the horse is suited to the fences. Would need several to come out to get into the race, but if not could see him in the Topham Chase again at the fixture.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 34 - Hill Sixteen

Form: 2U-370 / Official Rating: 143 / Weight: 10st 2lbs / Age: 10 / Jockey: Ryan Mania / Trainer: Sandy Thomson

Former Nigel Twiston-Davies runner who is now with the Sandy Thomson yard. Returned from a wind op to run well down the field at Kelso last time out and seems to have rather lost his way. His last win now was 13 runs back and in 2020.

On a plus, though he does seem to like the National-style fences – having run 7th in the Becher Chase back in December and was runner-up in the 2021 Becher Chase too. Only 10-2 to carry and is slipping to a fair handicap mark.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 33 - Diol Ker

Form: 0-9220 / Official Rating: 149 / Weight: 10st 8lbs / Age: 9 / Trainer: Noel Meade

One win in 13 over fences came in the Leinster National. Blinkers helped when short-headed in a valuable Leopardstown handicap but disappointed since.

Capable of better for his savvy trainer, however stamina doubts remain.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 32 - Sam Brown

Form: 1-35P5 / Official Rating: 159 / Weight: 11st 4lbs / Age: 11 / Jockey: J J Burke / Trainer: Anthony Honeyball

Has won over 3m1f in the last at Aintree, so stamina should be fine here. Winner of 3 of his 12 chase starts and will be spot on for this after a spin over hurdles recently at Uttoxeter.

Was also only 4 lengths behind the since Gold Cup second Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall Chase in October so if being that level of form to the table, this 11 year-old is an interesting outsider despite having 11-4 to carry.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 31 - Darasso

Form: 233154 / Official Rating: 154 / Weight: 10st 13lbs / Age: 10 / Trainer: J P O’Brien

Chased home Hewick in the Galway Plate but has never won beyond two and three-quarter miles.

Not one for the shortlist.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 30 - Cloudy Glen

Form: 1P9-3P / Official Rating: 145 / Weight: 10st 4lbs / Age: 10 / Jockey: Charlie Deutsch / Trainer: Venetia Williams

Over the years has looked like a typical National type. Comes from the Venetia Williams yard that won this in 2009 with Mon Mome, while runs in the colours of the late Trevor Hemmings, who won the National three times.

Does need to recover from being pulled up in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham though, but before that was a fair third in the Grand National Trial at Haydock.

Also won the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase (Old Hennessy) in 2021 and is only rated 5lbs higher here. Has had his training setbacks, but hard to ignore off just 10-4 in weight.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 29 - Fortescue

Form: U-44P5 / Official Rating: 140 / Weight: 9st 13lbs / Age: 9 / Jockey: Hugh Nugent / Trainer: Henry Daly

Ran a blinder to be 4th in the Becher Chase over these fences at Aintree in December. Since pulled up in the Welsh Grand National, but a better 5th in the Grand National Trial at Haydock.

Also ran in the 2022 National, but unseated late on when well back at the time. The handicapper has given him a chance on a 3lb lower mark this time but would need a lot to come out and might be seen in the Topham Chase if so.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 28 - Minella Trump

Form: 121-17 / Official Rating: 147 / Weight: 10st 6lbs / Age: 9 / Jockey: Theo Gillard / Trainer: Donald McCain

From the Donald McCain yard that has plenty of National history over the years. Can ignore his last run as that was a spin over hurdles to ready himself for his – 10 of the last 19 Grand National winners had run over hurdles earlier that season.

Prior to that had won twice at Perth last Spring/Summer and is only 2lbs higher this time. Stamina an unknown, as the furthest he’s gone to date is 3m, but this 9 year-old only has 10-6 to carry.

Could be an interesting outsider from a yard that knows the time of day with their National runners.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 27 - Enjoy D’Allen

Form: 9-0006 / Official Rating: 146 / Weight: 10st 5lbs / Age: 9 / Jockey: S D Torrens / Trainer: Ciaran Murphy

Got no further than the first fence in the race last year but returns this time on a 2lbs lower rating.

Should be fitter for a 6th in the G3 Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse last time out in February and could be a tad overpriced considering he went off 20/1 for the National last year.

Another for the green and gold silks of JP McManus.

A look at all 40 runners: No. 26 - Eva’s Oskar

Form: -62164 / Official Rating: 142 / Weight: 10st 1lbs / Age: 9 / Jockey: Alan Johns / Trainer: Tim Vaughan

Interesting contender from the Tim Vaughan yard that is having his first run in the race. Is a grey horse, so will get all the normal ‘grey’ attention as he looks to become only the four winning Grand National grey horse.

Won a decent handicap at Cheltenham as their December Meeting and was a fair 4th in the Eider Chase at Newcastle last time out. Only 10-1 in weight to carry, which will feel like a featherweight after having to lump around 12st the last twice.
