What is the Grand National 2023 and when is it?

Corach Rambler won the 2023 Grand National at Aintree backing up its status as the 8/1 favourite.

Mister Coffey and Coko Beach led early on and throughout most of the thrilling race. But chaotic scenes early on saw a number of fallers, including Lifetime Ambition, who was taken out by a loose horse at fence 9.

However, Corach Rambler, ridden by Derek Fox and trained by Lucinda Russell took the lead from Mister Coffey over the final fence and kicked for home to record a memorable win.

The race had been delayed after protestors breached the Aintree racecourse fence and got on to the course. The Grand National attracted criticism from animal rights protestors in the build-up, with three arrests made in connection with potential co-ordinated disruption activities at Aintree, which became nine following the pre-race disruption

22 horses run in the 2.25pm Novices Hurdle. It’s a big step up from the four runners of the previous race. Party Business, Mexico and Henrys Friend are all decent picks outside of the favourites.

Grand National 2023: 14:25pm - Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle

Good Time Jonny and West Balboa are the two most backed horses in the 14:25pm Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.

Harry and Dan Skelton like the look of West Balboa as do the experts who have been backing him all week to take this three and a half mile race.

Sam Thomas, a Gold Cup winning jockey on Denman is now a trainer and spoke about on the chances of his Grand National horse Our Power.

“I don’t look at the odds. It doesn’t matter if he is 10-1 or 100-1 really.” he said,

“We are just really happy to have a runner in the race. It has been a great season for him - he has won two nice big handicaps - so we are obviously coming into the race very optmisitc. But having ridden it myself I know how difficult it is, so we just hope he comes back safe and sound, first and foremost.

“I have got a lot more grey hairs now, a lot more wrinkles. It is chalk and cheese. You put so much into it when you are training. You live and breathe it. You only get out it what you put in. It is very, very different [to racing horses].

“As a jockey you always thought you made the difference but now I am in training you realise how little input you had as a jockey - it is about not cocking up as a jockey.”
