Brazil's Men soccer squad prepare for Olympic debut against Germany

After the Women’s tournament kicked off football at the 2020 Olympics on Wednesday - Team GB picking up an impressive victory - the Men’s event has followed suit on Thursday with Mexico and New Zealand among the early winners.

Brazil served notice of their intent - and more importantly their ability - to retain the Olympic Gold medal in men’s football with an impressive 4-2 victory over Germany on Thursday.

Five years ago in Rio, these two sides met in the final and it took a penalty shootout to separate them; here in Yokohama there was an absolute gulf between them in terms of quality, despite the scoreline somehow looking as though it was a reasonably close affair. And while it is only the first match of six if Brazil plan to go all the way once more and emulate Neymar, Marquinhos and Co, there were few flaws on show - outside of errant finishing - to give an indication of how rivals could upset them, even factoring in conceding twice.

Follow all the reaction to Brazil against Germany and the latest Olympics news from Tokyo 2020 below:

Penalty! Brazil 3-0 Germany

Oh dear. A penalty to Brazil after a hand was raised by a German defender.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

43 mins: A deep free-kick is lumped into the box by Germany. Udokhai climbs to try and meet it but the referee has already brought it back for a foul on a Brazil player.

Antony is robbed by Amiri though and Germany look to try and pick a pass. The playmaker looks up and attempts to find Kruse but it’s cut out so easily by Nino.

Changes HAVE to be made by the Germans at half-time.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

40 mins: Germany boss Stefan Kuntz has a face like thunder on the touchline. I don’t blame him, his team have been very, very bad in this first 45 minutes. Remember, Germany are the silver medallists from the last Olympic Games.

This is a first Games for all 22 players on the pitch, but Kuntz would still have been expecting a lot, lot more.

Amiri swings in a corner but Dani Alves clears it away at the front post for Amiri to try again. He goes again but Luiz is there this time to hook away.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

37 mins: Arnold goes into the book after a challenge on Richarlison. Can’t help but think the reaction from the Everton man got the German midfielder in trouble there.

There was a little rake of the studs after the tackle but it was very little. The writhing on the floor, well, the less said about that the better. We wouldn’t want to spoil Richarlison’s special 45 minutes now would we?

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

34 mins: Is that game over? It certainly feels that way. Richarlison has shown his class in this first half against a group of German players lacking in experience, particularly at the back.

Pieper has been run ragged by the Everton man, with Henrichs and Raum also struggling to deal with Antony and Claudinho on the flanks.

Richarlison finds space inside the box once more and should have played Cunha in. He goes for goal instead and it deflects wide. Selfish, but we’ll allow him that.

GOAL! Brazil 3-0 Germany (Richarlison, 30)

It is a hat-trick!

Another sublime finish from Richarlison! Bruno drives at the heart of the Germany defence. He slides it just inside the penalty area for the Everton man, who cuts back onto his right foot and curls it wonderfully into the far corner!

Richarlison needs just 30 minutes to net an Olympic hat-trick.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 2-0 Germany

30 mins: Kruse shows his experience by holding the ball up and winning a free-kick right in the corner deep inside the Brazil half.

Arnold delivers again but it’s poor once more as first man Antony heads it away easily. Men vs boys right now.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 2-0 Germany

28 mins: A rare foray forward for Germany as Stach feeds Amiri. He cuts in from the left-hand side but fires straight down the throat of Santos.

Brazil then break and Pieper brings Richarlison down just as he looks to be in! That could and maybe should have been a red. Instead, just a booking.

The Olympic champions win a corner which Antony curls in but this time Muller is able to punch away with aplomb.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 2-0 Germany

25 mins: Germany do not know what has hit them here. They cannot deal with the movement of the Brazilian midfield and certainly cannot handle the ruthless finishing from Richarlison.

First half hat-trick anyone?

GOAL! Brazil 2-0 Germany (Richarlison, 22)

Another one for the Everton man! And this is a lovely, silky move.

Bruno is picked out in space down the left-hand side and he whips the perfect cross in for the incoming Richarlison to power a superb header beyond Muller.

One. Way. Traffic.
