Brazil's Men soccer squad prepare for Olympic debut against Germany

After the Women’s tournament kicked off football at the 2020 Olympics on Wednesday - Team GB picking up an impressive victory - the Men’s event has followed suit on Thursday with Mexico and New Zealand among the early winners.

Brazil served notice of their intent - and more importantly their ability - to retain the Olympic Gold medal in men’s football with an impressive 4-2 victory over Germany on Thursday.

Five years ago in Rio, these two sides met in the final and it took a penalty shootout to separate them; here in Yokohama there was an absolute gulf between them in terms of quality, despite the scoreline somehow looking as though it was a reasonably close affair. And while it is only the first match of six if Brazil plan to go all the way once more and emulate Neymar, Marquinhos and Co, there were few flaws on show - outside of errant finishing - to give an indication of how rivals could upset them, even factoring in conceding twice.

Follow all the reaction to Brazil against Germany and the latest Olympics news from Tokyo 2020 below:

GOAL! Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany (Amiri, 56)

Where has that come from?!

A nightmare for Brazil keeper Santos. Richter let’s fly but it’s blocked. It drops to Amiri who has a speculative effort on the volley from the edge of the box. It bounces before reaching Santos but he still can’t get across his goal in time as it somehow finds the bottom corner.

Game on?

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

56 mins: After a bright start to the second half, it’s Brazil who are back in control now.

A ball down the side of the German defence finds Cunha. He reaches it and then clips it back for Claudinho who is breaking his neck to get into the box but his shot is wayward.

Moments later Dani Alves is in acres of space to fizz in a low cross into the box, only for Muller to cut it out before it can reach Richarlison at the back post.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

53 mins: Cunha just can’t find his goal! Antony skips beyond a challenge and lays in Guimaraes. He finds Cunha but the shot is straight into the chest of Muller.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

52 mins: Germany definitely look sharper now. You can only imagine the half-time team talk Stefan Kuntz will have given them.

Brazil continue to press high up the pitch but the Germans appear a bit more assured on the ball. I suppose the pressure is off now that they’re three goals down.

The Olympic champions come forward though and Germany are on the defensive as Cunha lays it off for Antony. He fires towards goal but Udokahi is able to get his body in the way and it bounces up kindly for Muller.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

49 mins: Better from Germany at the start of the second half. Richter tries an effort from 25 yards out which flies wide, but Brazil are already being put under more pressure than they were in the entirety of the first half.

Richter then immediately on the front foot again as he forces a corner off Diego Carlos. Amiri plays it short but it’s eventually lofted into the box, only for Udokhai to head over.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

46 mins: Here we go for the second half then. Centre-back Pieper has been hooked by Stefan Kuntz as Torunarigha comes on for the German defender.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-0 Germany

Some very questionable music being played from the tannoy during half-time. Honestly think the announcer might be singing.

Anyway, second half will be with you shortly.

Half-time: Brazil 3-0 Germany

That’s all she wrote for the first 45 minutes. It’s a half that belongs to Brazil forward Richarlison who has netted a 23-minute hat-trick in the opening game of the men’s football at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The gold medallists from Rio 2016 have made the perfect start to the defence of their title and never really looked troubled whatsoever. They have taken their chances through the ruthless Richarlison and defended well to shut out Germany.

Five years ago this was the Olympic final. Today it looks very different.

Penalty saved! Brazil 3-0 Germany

Oh that is a wonderful save! Cunha steps up and fires the spot kick towards the bottom corner but Muller is there brilliantly to spring across and palm it away with two strong hands!

Super stop.
