Brazil's Men soccer squad prepare for Olympic debut against Germany

After the Women’s tournament kicked off football at the 2020 Olympics on Wednesday - Team GB picking up an impressive victory - the Men’s event has followed suit on Thursday with Mexico and New Zealand among the early winners.

Brazil served notice of their intent - and more importantly their ability - to retain the Olympic Gold medal in men’s football with an impressive 4-2 victory over Germany on Thursday.

Five years ago in Rio, these two sides met in the final and it took a penalty shootout to separate them; here in Yokohama there was an absolute gulf between them in terms of quality, despite the scoreline somehow looking as though it was a reasonably close affair. And while it is only the first match of six if Brazil plan to go all the way once more and emulate Neymar, Marquinhos and Co, there were few flaws on show - outside of errant finishing - to give an indication of how rivals could upset them, even factoring in conceding twice.

Follow all the reaction to Brazil against Germany and the latest Olympics news from Tokyo 2020 below:

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

80 mins: Great chance for another of Brazil’s substitutes. This time it’s Reinier who Douglas Luiz clips a delightful ball into but he fails to bring the ball down inside the penalty area and Muller can mop up.

Germany are chasing shadows now and almost certainly will do until the final whistle here.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

77 mins: Cunha lays it off superbly for Paulinho who looks to find the corner of the net with his first touch. He guides it low but Muller is equal to it. It comes back out to Douglas Luiz but his effort is well over.

All Brazil since this moment...

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

74 mins: More subs here as Antony and hat-trick hero Richarlison make way for Brazil, replaced by Paulinho and Reinier.

Germany also make a change as Teuchert comes on for goalscorer Amiri.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

72 mins: Dani Alves, who was playing at right-back for the first 70 minutes, has now gone into central midfield. You’ve got to love that. A 38-year-old - with more than 40 major trophies in European football - living it up in midfield at the Olympic Games.

He’s knocking it around with a real freedom now. Germany looking leggy.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

70 mins: Ache and Lowen are both on for Kruse and Richter now. That’s all three of Germany’s over 24 players off the pitch. Kruse, Richter and Arnold. They’re down to the youngsters.

The tempo has totally gone from the Germans. They are sitting in a defensive block as if they have a lead to protect. That can happen when you’re a man down.

Meanwhile, Richarlison is STILL playing. Would you not want to conserve him?

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

68 mins: The free-kick is whipped in by Alves as Germany look to re-group following the sending off. It’s punched away unconvincingly for a corner by Muller.

Malcom’s corner is poor and Germany can clear their lines, but they have very little in the way of an outlet now.

Brazil dominating the ball.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

65 mins: SUB! Brazil’s Claudinho goes off and is replaced by Malcom.

RED CARD! Brazil 3-1 Germany (Arnold)

63 mins: Oh dear. Germany down to ten men as Max Arnold is shown a second yellow card for a late tackle on Dani Alves. Perhaps a little harsh, looks more like a coming together than a clear foul.

That could well end any hopes Germany have of getting something from this game.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

62 mins: Kruse thought he was in behind the Brazil defence for a moment there. His eventual cross was blocked but he was offside anyway.

The tempo of the game has just dropped off slightly in the last few minutes. Don’t blame the Brazil players, they haven’t stopped running for an hour.

Tokyo 2020: Brazil 3-1 Germany

59 mins: Will that rather fortunate Germany goal jolt them into life? If they can somehow score another one then it really is game on.

Richarlison gallops down the left-hand side and is brought down by Stach. He goes in the book too.

The resulting free-kick leads to a scramble in the box before the Germans somehow get it clear.
