Tokyo 2020 round-up

Spain face Argentina in the men’s football at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, with both nations needing a positive result to ensure they continue their journey in Japan.

The Europeans have so far won and drawn, but despite dominating long stretches of their matches they have been unable to click in attack, scoring just once so far - they are top of the group heading into the final 90 minutes, and need just a draw to guarantee a top-two finish. Argentina have it slightly more difficult, after defeat to Australia earlier in the group stage. They did recover to beat Egypt, but the lay of the group means they have to win this match to go through - anything less and they will be out, regardless of the result from the other match.

The race for medals looks set to be a tight one and there have already been plenty of surprise results - but to even have a chance at success, a big performance from both sides is required here.

Isabell Werth moves into second place with a score of 89.657, another extremely high score for Dujardin to beat.

But here she comes, along with horse Gio. Can Charlotte Dujardin make history? We’re about to find out.

Tokyo 2020: Spain 0-0 Argentina

Chances at either end - neither of them taken. Cucurella makes a great run down the left for Spain and cuts the ball back for Oyarzabal, but his first-time, right-footed shot is guided well over the bar. Not his favoured side, but he should have done much better.

At the other end of the pitch, Mac Allister tries to send a bouncing ball toward goal with a flying half-volley, but it’s awkward to control and sent too high. Still goalless both here and between Australia and Egypt.

Better work from Spain as Cucurella and Oyarzabal almost combine for shooting chances, then Pedri scuffs a deflected effort off-target. From the corner Zubimendi skies a volley so high it probably cleared the stadium roof.

Asensio is fouled out on the right channel and he takes the free-kick himself - but it’s a poor delivery and Ledesma claims.

The stakes keep getting higher for Charlotte Dujardin.

The two-time Olympic champion Dujardin will be performing shortly.

Tokyo Olympics: Andy Murray ‘crushed’ by doubles defeat

Is this an Olympic farewell from the two-time gold medal winner?

“I feel crushed after today’s loss, sport can be brutal,” Andy Murray said after he and men’s doubles partner were beaten by the Croatian pair of Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig.

“Thanks so much Joe Salisbury for the opportunity to play. You were brilliant. I wish it could have gone a little better but s--- happens.

“And if this is the end of my Olympics journey I want to say a huge thanks to Team GB and all the tennis support team for everything they have done to help me perform at my best over the years.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to represent you and my country at 4 Olympics and it’s given me some of the best memories of my life.”

Tokyo 2020: Spain 0-0 Argentina

24’ mins

Argentina seem to have found their feet and a measure of confidence, attacking somewhat more over the past few minutes. Their latest set-piece is delivered deep and Spain’s Mikel Merino, on the stretch, heads awkwardly just over his own crossbar - Unai Simon was worried for a moment it might have looped into the net.

Gaich then nods another corner goalward, but it’s an easy catch for Simon. Still 0-0 in both games.

Tokyo Olympics: How many ROC athletes are there?

After a World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) ban, Russian athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are competing under the banner of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).

The ROC is set to also compete under that name at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Wada handed an initial four-year ban to the country after finding that data provided by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency had been manipulated as part of a state-sponsored doping scheme.

The ROC have 330 competitors at Tokyo 2020, competing in 30 different sports.

Olmo tricks his way into the box and shoots - it’s blocked and he wants handball, but nothing given. On the rebound, Asensio evades a challenge and curls one left-footed, but another block sends the ball to safety. At the other end, Barco weaves his way into space and drills a low shot in which Unai Simon has to get down and save.

In the other game in the group, Australia and Egypt are still 0-0. The Aussies are second as it stands.
