Tokyo 2020 round-up

Spain face Argentina in the men’s football at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, with both nations needing a positive result to ensure they continue their journey in Japan.

The Europeans have so far won and drawn, but despite dominating long stretches of their matches they have been unable to click in attack, scoring just once so far - they are top of the group heading into the final 90 minutes, and need just a draw to guarantee a top-two finish. Argentina have it slightly more difficult, after defeat to Australia earlier in the group stage. They did recover to beat Egypt, but the lay of the group means they have to win this match to go through - anything less and they will be out, regardless of the result from the other match.

The race for medals looks set to be a tight one and there have already been plenty of surprise results - but to even have a chance at success, a big performance from both sides is required here.

Follow the latest updates from Spain vs Argentina and all the big news at Tokyo 2020 below:

Tokyo 2020: Spain 0-0 Argentina

53’ mins

Two early chances in the half for Spain, but another two efforts off-target. Pedri’s fine through-pass gave the best opportunity to Oyarzabal, but he skies his shot. At the other end set-pieces continue to be Argentina’s best route to goal, but Simon isn’t unduly troubled by a low shot after the latest free-kick.

Yellow card for Fauto Vera for a late tackle on Merino.

Charlotte Dujardin wins bronze to make GB history

A sixth Olympic medal moves Dujardin clear of Dame Katherine Grainger and Kathleen McKane Godfree, with cyclist Laura Kenny leading the way in terms of gold medals with four.

Kenny is competing in two events in Tokyo - so she could yet still level Dujardin’s six medals by the end of the Olympics.

Tokyo 2020: Spain 0-0 Argentina

Second half

We are back underway in both games. Big pressure on Argentina to perform here and come up with a win - Spain have been the more dangerous side, but once more very much lacking in a clinical edge of their own.

We’ll keep you up to date in the group’s other game too, where Egypt lead Australia and will go through as it stands.

BREAKING: Charlotte Dujardin wins bronze to make GB history!

Dujardin has done it! Schneider’s score falls short and Dujardin wins a sixth Olympic medal to become the most decorated female Olympian outright.

It’s gold for Von Bredow-Werndl and silver for Werth for more German success following yesterday’s team win - but that’s two bronze medals overall for Dujardin on new, inexperienced horse Gio.

It’s a score of 88.543 - that puts her in third place with one more rider to come!

No gold for Dujardin, then. But can she cling on to another medal?

Dujardin looks delighted with the performance as she congratulates Gio. But will it be enough to take a third gold medal?

It’s all very controlled from Dujardin and 10-year-old Gio - the canter pirouette being the centrepiece of the performance so far.

Tokyo 2020: Spain 0-0 Argentina

43’ mins

Into the closing stages of the first half. Dani Olmo lines up another free-kick but again it’s poor, curled a few yards over the bar. Spain continue to be impressive in their build-up play, particularly down the left flank with Cucurella’s constant runs, but the final pass or finish simply isn’t there.

Big news in Rifu - Egypt have taken the lead against Australia and they are suddenly up into second from bottom, in the live table.
