Also, I believe James Hall and Joe Fraser have done enough to secure their spots in the top 10. They will be eighth and ninth respectively.

Sun Wei is first up, and he matches Fraser’s score of 14.400 on the high bar. Xiao, the current leader, is next, and he lands a twisting dismount before punching the air in celebration.

Xiao gets a 14.066. Will it be enough? It certainly opens the door for Nagornyy - he’s up next and needs at least 14.400, with Hashimoto to come after.

Spain hold off Argentina, who simply can’t find a way through to find a second goal. It always looked beyond them, in truth - a real lack of cutting edge from both teams today.

A point is good enough for Spain to finish top, combined with Egypt beating Australia, but for Argentina the medal hopes come to a disappointing end.

Joe Fraser and Artur Dalaloyan wrap up their rotations on the high bar - with a pair of remarkable routines. Fraser sticks an ambitious dismount and matches the best score of the day so far on that apparatus with 14.400. That moves him to 84.499, which keeps him behind team-mate Hall.

James Hall, over on the floor routine, scores a 14.466 to finish on 84.598 overall. That might be good enough for a top 10 finish.

There’s the equaliser! A corner is met by Tomas Belmonte and he buries it with a fine header - 1-1 now and suddenly there’s the chance of a late turnaround. Three minutes plus injury time to go, Argentina need to score one more.

Oscar Gil is booked for Spain - their first of the game and he’ll be suspended for the quarter-finals. New Spurs signing Bryan Gil is coming on for Dani Olmo. Gaich has a really good chance for an equaliser but completely air-kicks as a low cross reaches him, then Eric Garcia almost scores an own goal and Simon has to make a fine save.

It’s all over in the other game - Egypt have scored on the counter-attack to lead Australia 2-0. As long as Argentina don’t make a dramatic late comeback here, it’s Egypt who will join Spain in the last eight.

So its Ruoteng Xiao who leads the men’s individual all-around with one rotation remaining. Nagornyy set a big score of 15.400 on the parallel bars but it wasn’t enough to move into first. Hashimoto in third has a good record on the horizontal bars - and there is nothing to separate the medal contenders! Who can hold their nerve?
