From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The first day of the Isle of Man TT combined entertainment and tragedy as Peter Hickman and Lee Johnston took victories overshadowed by a rider's death.

The opening RST Superbike race was red flagged due to an accident, which claimed the life of rider Daley Mathison. Race leaders Hickman and Dean Harrison had embarked on their third of four laps when the red flags were brought out due to a crash at Snugborough, on the run towards Union Mills early in the lap, which led to the standings at the end of lap two being used to determine the results and award Hickman his third TT victory. It has since been confirmed by Mathison's wife that he died following the accident.

The second race of the day saw the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom, power to victory with a new race record in the Locate.IM Sider Race 1, and in the final race of the day Johnston clinched his first victory at the TT in the Monster Energy Supersport Race One ahead of James Hillier and Hickman. Follow the live action below.

Lap 3: So Hickman leads at the end of the second lap but Harrison - just like last year - has the faster pit stop, and you would not be surprised to see Harrison lead at Glen Helen. Davey Todd's transponder meanwhil isn't working, which is why there's no gap for him in the standings, but he's running in 10th place. Lee Johnston meanwhile retires at the end of the second lap.

Lap 3: Towards Glen Helen we go and Harrison is back in front of Cummins on the road, but the Padgetts Honda is tucked right in behind him. Here's Hickman...he leads! Hickman has a 0.690s lead over Harrison, with the Kawasaki unable to pull out the usual advantage he holds on the first lap of the circuit.

Lap 3: The stops have shaken the order up there as Hillier has plummeted down the order - he must have had a problem between the Grandstand and Glen Helen. Rutter is up to fourth with Dunlop fifth, David Johnson sixth and Hillier dropping to seventh, but there's still more riders to come and that could get worse.

Lap 3: RED FLAG

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:48

RED FLAG: Harrison and Cummins had made it to Ballaugh Bridge just as the red flags came out, and it's reported in from race control that there's been an incident at Snugborough near Union Mills, which is near the third milestone not long into the lap.

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:51

RED FLAG: Hickman, Rutter, Dunlop, Johnson, Hillier, Gary Johnson and Hutchinson were all through Glen Helen at the time of the red flag, which requires riders to stop immediately and wait until they're collected. It means we'll have a lengthy delay on our hands, and we await news from race control on both the incident and also whether this will be declared as a result.

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:53

RED FLAG: Still nothing in from race control, and given the reports that can come from around the 37.7-mile circuit that can emulate without basis, we will not be reporting anything unless it's confirmed given the severity that can come with accidents at the TT.
