From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The first day of the Isle of Man TT combined entertainment and tragedy as Peter Hickman and Lee Johnston took victories overshadowed by a rider's death.

The opening RST Superbike race was red flagged due to an accident, which claimed the life of rider Daley Mathison. Race leaders Hickman and Dean Harrison had embarked on their third of four laps when the red flags were brought out due to a crash at Snugborough, on the run towards Union Mills early in the lap, which led to the standings at the end of lap two being used to determine the results and award Hickman his third TT victory. It has since been confirmed by Mathison's wife that he died following the accident.

The second race of the day saw the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom, power to victory with a new race record in the Locate.IM Sider Race 1, and in the final race of the day Johnston clinched his first victory at the TT in the Monster Energy Supersport Race One ahead of James Hillier and Hickman. Follow the live action below.

Race winner Peter Hickman is back in the paddock, but it's muted celebrations for obvious reasons:

Where did you make up the time?

"Good question, I dont know, you're better off telling me!

"It just felt ok, the bike was working good, the superbike had a problem yesterday so this is the superstock bike with a few superbike pieces on it. It's a road racing engine. As usual it took me a bit to get going but I was soon away, the pit stop was steady, I was a bit cautious. I was strong on the mountain again.

"But it's a shame it's been cut short, so I hope whoever is in the incident is ok."

Dean Harrison:

"I had something going wrong with the bike, it was like I was touching the shifter, it just kept shifting. I got ahead of Conor and then he got back in front of me, but when I left the pits I went for it and it was fine until the race was stopped on lap two."

Conor Cummins:

"I'm happy with being on the box but just hope everyone is ok. It's only two laps isn't it, but I'll take it.

"Thanks to everyone for the support and I'm happy to be third.

"It helps me in certain places, on the mountain I was able to grab a bit back on Dean, but it's a bit tricky to say the least."

Confirmation has come through that the first Sidecar race has been delayed through to 1:30pm following the accident at Snugborough.

As the Locate.IM Sidecar race one gets underway, the lack of adhesion flag is shown to riders for the incident at Snugborough, which has resulted in a large oil spill that had to be cleaned up and resulted in the delay.

We'll bring you confirmation on the crash as soon as it's in.

A slight amendment to this evening's schedule as roads will remain closed following the first supersport race in order for a one-lap superstock practice, as confirmed by clerk of the course Gary Thompson:

It's a dominant victory for Ben and Tom Birchall as the brothers power to their ninth TT victory by more than 40 seconds, having come within a whisker of setting a new lap record in the process and teasing the first ever 120mph lap.

Sadly, the news has arrived that we all dreaded. Daley Mathison's wife has confirmed on Twitter that he has passed away following a crash during this morning's RST Superbike race.
