From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The first day of the Isle of Man TT combined entertainment and tragedy as Peter Hickman and Lee Johnston took victories overshadowed by a rider's death.

The opening RST Superbike race was red flagged due to an accident, which claimed the life of rider Daley Mathison. Race leaders Hickman and Dean Harrison had embarked on their third of four laps when the red flags were brought out due to a crash at Snugborough, on the run towards Union Mills early in the lap, which led to the standings at the end of lap two being used to determine the results and award Hickman his third TT victory. It has since been confirmed by Mathison's wife that he died following the accident.

The second race of the day saw the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom, power to victory with a new race record in the Locate.IM Sider Race 1, and in the final race of the day Johnston clinched his first victory at the TT in the Monster Energy Supersport Race One ahead of James Hillier and Hickman. Follow the live action below.

Lap 2: McGuinness is in to the pits at the end of the first lap and there's confusion in the Norton camp as McGuinness sprints into parc ferme - well as much of a sprint an old-timer with a dodgy leg can - to grab something and bring it back to the bike. The team say it's something to do with an oil pressure sensor, but he's going nowhere fast.

Lap 2: The leaders are through Glen Helen and back into Harrison territory, where he's pulled half-a-second more on Hickman to stretch the lead to 1.5s. Cummins has very much made third place his own, with Hillier plummeting back in fourth.

Lap 2: Harrison is flying and his sector from Glen Helen to Ballaugh is just one second off the all-time sector record. That's stretched the lead considerably and Hickman has fallen 4.8s off. He's going to need a big second-half of the lap as they head towards the one and only pit-stop of this four-lap race.

Lap 2: Harrison leads on the track! The Kawasaki reaches Ramsey Hairpin in front of Cummins, meaning the gap has just strecthed past 10 seconds, though this is a mighty impressive run from Cummins regardless and you can't count him out of this yet. Hillier goes through Ramsey and is 26 seconds behind Cummins, and Hickman is not far behind as he steadies the gap to Harrison at 4.003s. That's a good sign for Hicky there as he needed to respond.

Lap 2: Rutter has moved up to fifth ahead of Dunlop, with just 0.7s between them at Ramsey.

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:35

Lap 2: Cummins isn't lying down here and he's back in front of Harrison on the road as they reach the Bungalow, suggesting Harrison has had a slower sector there. This could play right into Hickman's hands...and it has! The gap is just 0.045s!

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:37

Lap 2: This is mighty close as they prepare for the stops, with Cummins still in front of Harrison at the Cronk, meaning it could compromise the race leader heading into Gasoline Alley. But will he still be the leader? Here they come...

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:39

Lap 2: 132.57mph for Harrison, with Cummins just a shade off that at 132.37mph. But Hickman LEADS at Cronk-Ny-Mona!

Jack de Menezes3 June 2019 11:40

Lap 2: Hillier into the pits next from fourth but all eyes are on Hickman...he leads! 132.947mph stands as the fastest lap so far and the gap is 1.782s!
