Japan's stunning upset of Ireland on Saturday shattered the expected permutations of the pool and the Scots knew they needed to get a big win on the board after their dismal defeat to the Irish in their opener.
Winger Sean Maitland and scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw scored converted tries with Stuart Hogg landing a 40-metre drop goal in the first half, while two penalty tries after the break secured the all-important extra point.

Scotland 25-20 Samoa: Scotland should deliver something of a response to last week’s shocker against Ireland, and the nine days’ rest will have helped compared to Samoa’s week-turnaround. However, results between these two sides tend to be tight, and on the grand occasion of a World Cup clash, this should be no different.

Another score from the Scots! Crikey, where has this come from? Scotland set up play in their opponents' half before pinging it back to Stuart Hogg who, from distance, guides the ball through the posts for three more points.

Off the line-out, the ref's hand goes up. Samoa are penalised for collapsing the maul. Stuart Hogg kicks again for the 5-metre line down in the right-hand corner. Another line-out for the Scots as they push for a third try.

Yes, yes they do. The Samoa defence eventually draws the penalty and kick for touch. They have to play the line-out here... but it's clean. Steve Jackson's side win the throw-in and boot play out for half-time.

A much better end to that first half after the opening 20 minutes suggested we might be in for a bit of a slog-fest. The Scots eventually found their rhythm to start puncturing their opponents' backline and once they did, it was Gregor Townsend's men who seized the initiative. A superb kick from Finn Russell handed Scotland their first try, Sean Maitland dotting down after making the catch, before Greg Laidlaw added his side's second moments later following a quick-fire break through the centre of Samoa's defence.
HALF-TIME: Scotland 20-0 Samoa
It's testament to Scotland's mentality that they were able to come through that opening 20-minute spell when the handling errors were coming thick and fast. I lost count of the amount of times the ball was dropped as Scotland looked to be building up play. The frustration was clearly itched on the players' faces, but all it took was one moment to swing the pendulum in their direction. It'll be interesting to see how Samoa respond having wilted in the face of their opponents' sudden surge.
