Scotland revived their Rugby World Cup campaign with a 34-0 victory over Samoa on Monday, scoring four tries in a much-improved performance to secure a bonus point that could prove crucial in a tight Pool A.

Japan's stunning upset of Ireland on Saturday shattered the expected permutations of the pool and the Scots knew they needed to get a big win on the board after their dismal defeat to the Irish in their opener.

Winger Sean Maitland and scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw scored converted tries with Stuart Hogg landing a 40-metre drop goal in the first half, while two penalty tries after the break secured the all-important extra point.

Prediction

Scotland 25-20 Samoa: Scotland should deliver something of a response to last week’s shocker against Ireland, and the nine days’ rest will have helped compared to Samoa’s week-turnaround. However, results between these two sides tend to be tight, and on the grand occasion of a World Cup clash, this should be no different.

And here come the players for the second half! These opening 15 minutes will be absolutely crucial.

KICK-OFF! Greg Laidlaw gets us under way, sending it high and long.

41 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

Samoa don't find touch after claiming play on the restart. Stuart Hogg collects and Scotland are straight into their opponents.

43 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

Some real intent here from Samoa as Ed Fidow, positioned on the left, dinks play into the pocket of space in between Scotland's centres and Stuart Hogg. Fidow bursts forward with some serious speed to bear down on the Scottish 15 but the ball bounces kindly for him. His teammates join the fight as Hogg makes contact and the danger is quickly cleared. A tense moment there...

45 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

Samoa scrum. It's a bloodbath. The Scots turned like a doorknob. Penalty to Steve Jackson's side. Tusi Pisi gets decent distance on his kick and we go forward for a Samoan line-out on the left flank.

46 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

The maul is formed and suddenly Samoa are away. They creep forward, drawing the penalty as they go, with Scotland's players illegally entering the rolling mass of bodies from the side. Tusi Pisi once again kicks for touch. We're 10 or so metres from the Scottish line.

48 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

The line-out is good and play is quickly worked inward. They're battering the Scottish defence in front of the posts... but the ball goes forward! The Dark Blues back on top.

49 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

Tim Nanai-Williams makes the intercept and darts for the line!

But Scotland had the penalty advantage, and the Samoan is summoned back to the centre of the park. Close but no cigar. Stuart Hogg's turn to kick for touch. Scottish line-out on their opponents' 10-metre line.

49 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

Stuart McInally, of all people, makes a break following a solid line-out. The hooker showed real pace there to puncture the Samoan line from an offload. But, once again, Scotland had the penalty for a Samoa infringement at the line-out. Back we go.

51 min: Scotland 20-0 Samoa

Ah, the knock-on makes its inglorious return. Scotland had drifted in to the centre of Samoa's 22 from the line-out, with Greg Laidlaw on hand to provide quick ball off the base of the ruck. Up came Sam Johnson at pace but the 12 fumbled play as he prepared to make contact. Samoa scrum, 10 metres out from their post.
