Scotland revived their Rugby World Cup campaign with a 34-0 victory over Samoa on Monday, scoring four tries in a much-improved performance to secure a bonus point that could prove crucial in a tight Pool A.

Japan's stunning upset of Ireland on Saturday shattered the expected permutations of the pool and the Scots knew they needed to get a big win on the board after their dismal defeat to the Irish in their opener.

Winger Sean Maitland and scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw scored converted tries with Stuart Hogg landing a 40-metre drop goal in the first half, while two penalty tries after the break secured the all-important extra point.

Prediction

Scotland 25-20 Samoa: Scotland should deliver something of a response to last week’s shocker against Ireland, and the nine days’ rest will have helped compared to Samoa’s week-turnaround. However, results between these two sides tend to be tight, and on the grand occasion of a World Cup clash, this should be no different.

20 min: Scotland 3-0 Samoa

Scotland continuing to mix up their play here. From a clean line-out, Finn Russell goes for the wrap-around off Sam Johnson but it doesn't quite work. The ball is frantically exchanged among the Scots before they find some composure at least to take it into contact. It's not exactly been crisp from Townsend's men, though they've admittedly looked more threatening. Samoa's defence isn't making matters any easier.

21 min: Scotland 3-0 Samoa

We have another Samoa scrum. It's solid, and away they go!

Tim Nanai-Williams gets his hands on the ball just off the Samoa 10 and sends it downfield with a well-placed kick to put the pressure back on Scotland as we go for a line-out.

24 min: Scotland 3-0 Samoa

More handling errors. Can imagine the ball must be like a bar of soap out in those humid conditions but both sides need to do better as Scotland drop possession once again following a quick line-out in their own half. Samoa scrum.

25 min: Scotland 3-0 Samoa

Jack Lam peels away from the rear of the scrum and takes play deep into Scotland's half. This is promising from the Samoans as they slowly creep into their opponents' 22... but there's the referee's whistle. And it's Steve Jackson's side who are penalised for not releasing. Excellent defensive work from the Scots. They kick for touch.

27 min: Scotland 3-0 Samoa

Oh. Yep, that didn't take long. Another dropped ball from Scotland. Shock, horror. Someone change the tune please.

29 min: Scotland 3-0 Samoa

At last, some electric play from Scotland. They win the scrum and are immediately away down the right, Darcy Graham once again putting his speed to good use as he turns inside out, inside out, sending the Samoan defence into a dizzy. But as the tackle was finally made, he got his body into the wrong position and ended up sending the offload into no man's land. From fantastic to farcical.

TRY! Scotland score at last!

30 min: Scotland 10-0 Samoa (Maitland try, Laidlaw conversion)

Finally, Scotland are rewarded for their efforts. Spotting a huge pocket of space down in the left-hand corner, Finn Russell sent a perfectly-executed kick deep into the Samoan 22. Sean Maitland came at pace to soar through the air and get two firm hands on the ball (no fumbled possession on this occasion...) before reaching over the line, despite Tim Nanai-Williams' best efforts to stop him.

TRY! Scotland have their second!

Samuel Lovett30 September 2019 11:58

35 min: Scotland 17-0 Samoa (Laidlaw try and conversion)

Scotland looked re-energised off that first try and hit back hard at Samoa once they reclaimed possession off the restart. It was Finn Russell who initially punctured the line, making a quick offload to Jamie Ritchie in support. The 7 carried play straight towards the posts but, met with a wall of light blue shirts, set up Greg Laidlaw to his left. Tusi Pisi was on hand to make the tackle from eight metres out but actually ended up shunting the Scottish 9 closer towards the Samoan line in the process. A simple touch down, and conversion, followed.
