England suffered a shock defeat to Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup at Headingley.

Eoin Morgan's men were on a high after a blistering innings from the skipper himself powered them to a 150-run win over Afghanistan at Old Trafford on Tuesday. But they came crashing down to earth at Headingley as Lasith Malinga shredded their top order on the way to a famous win.

Here's how it played out:

England 38-2 (10 overs)

Morgan gets away with one there - he edges it outside the off stump, but it falls a whisker short of second slip.

Only three from that over, as we move onto powerplay 2.

England 41-2 (11 overs) Root 20 (36) Morgan 6 (11)

Dhananjaya de Silva comes into the attack, and his spin limits England to just three runs in his opening over.

Root and Morgan just gradually upping the England total, without taking too many risky shots.

England 42-2 (12 overs)

He hasn't got a wicket so far, but Pradeep's bowling has been excellent. Only a single from that over, and his figures are now 12 runs in six overs.

England 47-2 (13 overs)

Five from the over as Root and Morgan continue to prod the ball around the pitch with ease.

With this target, they can afford to do that.

Thisara Perera replaces Nuwan Pradeep in the attack...

England 50-2 (14 overs)

Perera continues how Pradeep finished, as he limits England to just three in that over.

They've sustained pressure on the tournament hosts have Sri Lanka in this opening period, but can they claim a few more scalps?

James Vince shows his frustration after edging to slip...

England 53-2 (15 overs) Root 27 (59) Morgan 11 (31)

Once again, only three from the over.

No signs of panic from England's no.3 & 4 though. 180 more runs needed to win, from 35 overs.

Kieran Jackson21 June 2019 15:34

England 58-2 (16 overs)

5 from the over. On ball two, Morgan looks to smash it into the stands down the ground, but doesn't get hold of it, and it lands safe beyond mid-off.

England 68-2 (17 overs) - ENGLAND NEED ANOTHER 165 RUNS TO WIN

A first boundary in a while, as Morgan clips it down leg side for four off new bowler Udana.

Root also gets a boundary off the final ball, as he finds the gap leg side for four - as usual, timed to perfection.

Drinks incoming...
