England suffered a shock defeat to Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup at Headingley.

Eoin Morgan's men were on a high after a blistering innings from the skipper himself powered them to a 150-run win over Afghanistan at Old Trafford on Tuesday. But they came crashing down to earth at Headingley as Lasith Malinga shredded their top order on the way to a famous win.

Here's how it played out:

England 4-1 (2 overs)

Good start from Pradeep, as Root misses a cover drive on the final ball.

Only a single from the over.

England 4-1 (3 overs)

A Malinga maiden. Excellent bowling, as Vince fends off a variety of deliveries.

England 10-1 (4 overs)

A lovely cover drive off the back foot by Root gives England their first boundary of the game, but England's no.3 is lucky on the final ball of the over, as a mistimed drive falls just short of extra cover.

Six from the over.

England 15-1 (5 overs)

A couple of 2s by Root to the off-side, and five from the over in total.

Root progresses to 12 from 19 balls, Vince on 3 from 10.

England 16-1 (6 overs)

Hhhmmm England are on the back foot a little here...

More consistent bowling by Pradeep - Vince edges it down to third man, and Root comes close to edging it behind.

WICKET! England 26-2. Vince ct K Mendis b Malinga 14 (18) (6.5 overs)

After hitting two consecutive fours, Vince goes chasing a ball outside off stump and edges the ball to first slip Kudal Mendis, who takes a good catch.

Malinga strikes again!

England 26-2 (8 overs)

A maiden for Pradeep, who continues to bowl consistently at off-stump.

Root not keen to take any run there.

England 35-2 (9 overs)

Four runs to start and end the over, first by Morgan off-side and then by Root down the ground. Nine from the over, Root now on 16.
