Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.
Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.
In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

ENG 49-2, Burns 28, Root 10
Cummins has Rory Burns in his sights. His first ball is banged in short and Burns gets on top of it to block it down into the turf.
There's an immediate field change and fourth slip moves across to leg slip.
Rory Burns can expect plenty of short pitched bowling for a while.
ENG 49-2, Burns 28, Root 10
88 mph stuff from Cummins but Burns is playing it okay. He's dropping his hands and swaying away from the ball.
Oooh. Cummins directs one at Burns' ribs and he has no choice but to play. He looks really awkward but manages to keep the ball down.
It's a good battle this one.
ENG 49-2, Burns 28, Root 10
Nathan Lyon gets his first crack at Joe Root. He's searching for the slight rough outside of Root's off stump.
There's a bit of bounce and a bit of spin there but Root pushes back a maiden over.
ENG 50-2, Burns 28, Root 10
Fifty up for England courtesy of a Pat Cummins no ball. There's a little ripple of applause from the crowd for that mini achievement.
ENG 50-2, Burns 28, Root 10
Pat Cummins is winning the personal battle with Rory Burns, he's got him ducking, weaving and keeps hitting him on the thigh pad.
But... Burns is still there, concentrating with a steely focus in his eyes.
ENG 51-2, Burns 28, Root 11
Nathan Lyon is building some pressure on Root. The England captain dances down the pitch and tries to work him to leg but the ball thuds into his pads.
He stays back for the next ball and dabs it into the leg side for a single.
That's the first run off the bat for seven overs and the crowd cheer it.
ENG 55-2, Burns 28, Root 11
Hostile. That's the word to sum up this spell from Cummins, he continues his barrage but at Joe Root this time.
His line strays onto the legs of Root and the ball shoots down to fine leg off the thigh pad. Four leg byes to England.
ENG 59-2, Burns 28, Root 15
Runs this time. The ball is too full and too straight to Root, who waits for the ball and whips it away to the mid-wicket boundary for four.
ENG 64-2, Burns 29, Root 19
Burns prefers to face Nathan Lyon, he rocks back and cuts him powerfully away for one run.
Lyon doesn't adjust to the right-handed Root who tickles the ball away to fine leg and picks up another boundary.
