England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

ENG 68-2, Burns 33, Root 19

Catch! is the cry as Hazlewood digs a short ball into Burns who swivels and pulls the ball to fine leg for four runs.

It wasn't exactly convincing but Burns controlled it enough to pick up a boundary.

ENG 68-2, Burns 33, Root 19

Hazlewood tries to come across Burns and get him feeling for the ball outside the off stump. Burns is up to the challenge and leaves them alone.

Only the one boundary off the over.

ENG 68-2, Burns 33, Root 19

Short leg is interested with Lyon bowling. Root is happy to lunge forward and block the ball off the front foot bringing short leg into play if it spins.

Lyon is getting the ball to spin but Root is mixing it up playing the ball off both the front and back foot.

ENG 68-2, Burns 33, Root 19

Lyon throws the ball a touch fuller and Root plays back. The ball grips and spins back into the England captain and hits him in front of the stumps but on the thigh pad.

Too high for lbw.

ENG 68-2, Burns 33, Root 19

Australia have put two men back on the fine leg boundary. One is very fine and the other is wider. Both are there in case Rory Burns decides to hook the ball.

Hazlewood tries to entice him but Burns leaves the ball alone.

ENG 69-2, Burns 34, Root 19

Hazlewood isn't as short this time and Burns guides the ball off his hip and away for one run to end the over.

ENG 70-2, Burns 35, Root 19

Burns cuts Lyon away again for another single. Root continues his own battle with Lyon.

You can see the gears working away in Joe Root's mind on how to play Nathan Lyon. He tries a big pull shot but doesn't beat the fielder at 45.

Then he comes down the pitch to work ball to leg and hits the mid-wicket fielder.

ENG 70-2, Burns 35, Root 19

Root can't get Lyon away and the over ends with the players taking drinks.

It's pretty evident that Root doesn't just want Lyon to bowl at him, he wants to get him away but Lyon is keeping things tight and making it hard work.

ENG 72-2, Burns 37, Root 19

Rory Burns takes the runs on offer as Hazlewood pushes the ball across him and he pushes it into the off side off the back foot.

Tim Paine has three men out on the hook for Burns, the two fine legs and a deep square leg. This will test Burns' mental fortitude to see if he can get through this period as well.

ENG 75-2, Burns 40, Root 19

A change in field brings one of the fine leg fielders into a leg gully area. This is for the defensive push away from the ribs.

Hazlewood double bluffs and bowls full to Burns who flicks it off his legs for three runs.

He brings up the fifty partnership with that three, England are slowly building a platform.
