England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

Teams

England: Burns, Denly, Root, Roy, Stokes, Bairstow, Buttler, Overton, Archer, Broad, Leach.

Australia: Warner, Harris, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Wade, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood.

ENG 35-2, Burns 19, Root 6

Hazlewood continues to go about his business. Hit a good length, find top of off. Hit a good length, find top of off. Hit a good length, find top of off.

Root defends all three.

ENG 39-2, Burns 19, Root 10

Classic Joe Root. Hazlewood's line is slightly off, Root stays on the back foot, watches the ball onto the bat and plays it late, guiding it down to third man for four runs.

ENG 43-2, Burns 23, Root 10

Hazlewood's skill is getting the ball to wobble, just a touch, both ways and the skill of the batsmen comes with reading each delivery and knowing which ones they can score off.

Gimme from Starc. He was perhaps searching for the inswinging yorker but it ends up being a full toss to Rory Burns.

Burns welcomes it happily and smokes it away for four through point.

ENG 47-2, Burns 27, Root 10

Starc searches for the yorker again but strays too close to leg stump. Burns flicks it to fine leg for two more.

The length is dragged back by Starc but the line is the same and Burns takes him for another couple with a push off his hip.

A more assured looking shot from the England man.

ENG 48-2, Burns 27, Root 10

Australia's bowling attack is very hard to play against. Hazlewood is seen as the line and length, tie up one end bowler but his average pace for this spell is 87 mph. That's three to four mph more than Stuart Broad and Hazlewood is the slowest of the seamers in this attack.

He gets one to nip back and hit Root on the thigh pad and England pick up a leg bye. The only run that comes from the over.

ENG 48-2, Burns 27, Root 10

A short spell from Mitchell Starc comes to an end. Pat Cummins is coming on to bowl from the Brian Statham end.

He took the wicket of Joe Denly last night, what damage can he do to England today?

Michael Jones6 September 2019 14:10

ENG 48-2, Burns 27, Root 10

Cummins bowls with a short leg to both Denly and Burns but not so with Joe Root. He starts with the ball just back of a length but outside off and Root leaves them alone.

Cummins then jags one into the England captain who defends it into the ground.

ENG 48-2, Burns 27, Root 10

Cummins starts with a probing maiden to Joe Root. Nathan Lyon is going to have an early bowl, he's replacing Josh Hazlewood.

ENG 48-2, Burns 27, Root 10

Last night Rory Burns look to play Lyon off the back foot and cut him away into the off side. He's favouring the front foot today but only to defend.

ENG 49-2, Burns 28, Root 10

Burns sweeps the last ball of the over and takes a single.
