Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.
Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.
In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

Teams
England: Burns, Denly, Root, Roy, Stokes, Bairstow, Buttler, Overton, Archer, Broad, Leach.
Australia: Warner, Harris, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Wade, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood.
ENG 25-1, Burns 15, Overton 5
Overton lunges forward and prods the ball into the off side and picks up two runs. England have their first runs of the day.
ENG 25-2
GONE! That didn't take long.
Hazlewood persists with his line and length. Overton comes forward again and the ball just shapes away, taking the edge and finding second slip.
Overton c Smith b Hazlewood 5 (15)
ENG 26-2, Burns 15, Root 1
Joe Root comes in at his preferred number four spot thanks to the night watchman. The situation is one Root will be used to, England 20 odd for 2 and in trouble.
Hazlewood strays onto Root's pads and he flicks the ball away to get off the mark.
ENG 26-2, Burns 15, Root 1
Great start for Hazlewood. He's got rid of the nightwatchman early and in the process takes his 50th wicket against England.
ENG 27-2, Burns 15, Root 2
Root found a touch of form in the second innings at Headingley when he made 77. He needs to replicate that here.
Starc's line is too straight and Root gets off strike by turning the ball to fine leg for one.
ENG 31-2, Burns 19, Root 2
Four runs to end the over.
Starc challenges Burns with some short stuff that he evades well. Happily for Burns, Starc changes it up for the last delivery and England's opener leans into the drive and times the ball through cover for four.
ENG 31-2, Burns 19, Root 2
This is the big battle of the game. Hazlewood vs Root.
Hazlewood bowls a nagging, testing length that can be attacked if played well. Root tries to drive the ball and it nips past his outside edge.
Hazlewood stands with his hands on his head, disbelieving that Root missed it.
ENG 35-2, Burns 19, Root 6
Hazlewood follows it up with two balls that cut back at Root but the England captain leaves them on length.
The Aussie fielders are letting Root know what he's in for. Root does his best to ignore them as Hazlewood bowls it fuller.
Root leans into another cover drive, this time the ball is closer to him and fuller in length. He doesn't quite time it but the outfield is wet and slows down the ball.
By the time the ball is fielded and returned to the wicketkeeper, Root and Burns have run four.
ENG 35-2, Burns 19, Root 6
Starc's pace is troubling for Burns. He's repeatedly up between 88-92 mph, the paces England would like to see Jofra Archer hit regularly.
When he ball is full Burns is able to defend it pretty well. When it gets pulled further back it hurries him.
Starc finds a touch of away swing from the left-hander and Burns chases it with a booming drive but misses the ball.
