England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

When is the fourth Ashes Test?

The fourth Test takes place on 4-8 September at Old Trafford.

What time does it start?

The toss will take place at 10:30am on Wednesday 4 September, with play due to get underway each day at 11am.

Where can I watch it?

The Test will be shown live on Sky Sports Cricket and Sky Sports Main Event from 10am.

Teams

England: Burns, Denly, Root, Roy, Stokes, Bairstow, Buttler, Overton, Archer, Broad, Leach.

Australia: Warner, Harris, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Wade, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood.

Some of the Australian bowlers are on the outfield going through their warm ups and preparations.

Joe Root has gone out to the middle to inspect the pitch for himself.

No doubt he'll be out there again, this time in full whites and pads, at some point in the not too distant future.

In spite of the rain the pitch still looks very good for batting on.

It'll be hard work early on but if the batsmen get themselves in, things will get easier.

The biggest threat comes from the fresh, fast Aussie bowlers first up but Nathan Lyon will have a big part to play if England can take the game deep.

Especially as he should get some help off the surface.

After a few mistakes in the field yesterday, perhaps England can take inspiration from Romania's cricketing social media superstar Pavel Florin:

This will be a big innings for Rory Burns. He looked impressive at Edgbaston where he scored 133 in the first innings but since then he hasn't kicked on.

Australia have found a way to get him out by targeting him with quick short pitched bowling.

For Burns the challenge will be to find a way to survive that onslaught and then make hay while the sun shines.

The familiar sounds of 'Jeruslaem' reverberate around Old Trafford which can only mean one thing.

Day Three is about to start.

Here come the players, England are 23-1, trailing by 474 runs.

ENG 23-1, Burns 15, Overton 3

Mitchell Starc will open the bowling for Australia. Rory Burns is on strike.

ENG 23-1, Burns 15, Overton 3

Starc directs the first ball into Burns. Burns stays on the back foot and the ball thuds into his thigh pad.

Matthew Wade at short leg is always interested when Burns is on strike.

ENG 23-1, Burns 15, Overton 3

Burns comes forward as Starc pitches the ball a touch fuller, around a good length. He opens the face of the bat but finds gully.

Starc follows it up with a straight one. Burns comes across his stumps and the ball hits him above the knee roll on the front pad.

Australia are interested until the umpire says not out. The ball would have gone over leg stump.

Starc starts with a maiden.

ENG 23-1, Burns 15, Overton 3

Josh Hazlewood starts from the James Anderson end. Craig Overton will have his work cut out for him.

Hazlewood is bang on the money straight away. Just back of a length, hitting the top of off stump.
