Europe have won the Ryder Cup after holding off a late fightback to defeat USA 16.5-11.5 on a dramatic final day of singles at Marco Simone.

The Europeans were led from the front by an inspired Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy, who put captain Luke Donald’s side on the verge of victory.

But the Americans showed fight and character with the middle of the leaderboard turning into a sea of red, forcing Europe to hold their nerve and close it out.

After Max Homa denied Matt Fitzpatrick, who missed a putt to clinch the cup, the winning half-point was secured by Tommy Fleetwood down the stretch, getting Europe past the magic 14.5 mark with his victory over Rickie Fowler. And the final match was left to Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth, with the American snatching a half surrounded by chaos on the 18th as joyous European fans started the party in Rome.

Follow all the reaction and latest updates from Rome as Europe win the Ryder Cup.

Rose back within one

Justin Rose v Patrick Cantlay 1UP (15)

Justin Rose just doesn’t know when to give up. What a bounce-back birdie from the Englishman who pours in a 12-footer and celebrates wildly.

This one is going right down to the wire.

Rahm rescues half on the last

Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler - match tied

So here we have it. Scheffler takes the oin out as he looks to attack the hole.

He needs to hole out for the win...but he can’t manage it!

Rahm does it again, rescueing yet another half point on the 18th hole. With Europe wobbling that could be massive!

Scheffler in trouble on the last

Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler 1UP (17)

Drama on the 18th. Scheffler is right of the green in two with the ball in the rough but the American catches a flyer out of the rough and it flies through the back of the green and just about clings onto the rough with water lurking.

Rahm is on the green in two after two monstrous and will just want to lag this put down towards the hole from right across the green....perfectly done by the Spaniard and that will be conceded.

Scheffler needs to chip in now to win this match.

Hatton missed great chance

2UP Tyrrell Hatton v Brian Harman (12)

And now it’s Hatton who is looking nervy with the flat stick! Almost a kick-in putt but Hatton pushes it right of the hole and passes up on the opportunity to move three ahead.

A lifeline for Harman...

Homa misses golden opportunity

Matt Fitzpatrick v Max Homa 1UP (13)

A really good couple of chances for Fitzpatrick on the last two holes but he can’t take advantage of either. Homa is in close on the 13th, too, but he misses his short-range look at a birdie to move two clear. That is a bad miss.

It’s getting nervy out there!

Cantlay extends lead

Justin Rose v Patrick Cantlay 2UP (14)

Ah, that’s a mistake from Rose, who makes a meal out of the 14th and is scrambling for his par. Cantlay almost converts a monster putt from long range but he wins the whole, regardless, as Rose fails to make par.

The American is two up with four to play.

Viktor Hovland speaking after his 4&3 victory over Collin Morikawa

“I didn’t give Collin a whole lot, to be honest, actually played some of my best golf.

It looked really good early on, things move around. There’s too much red on there for my liking, but I have faith in the guys.”

Ben Fleming1 October 2023 14:17

Burns pulls one back

3UP Rory McIlroy v Sam Burns (13)

Sam Burns is still hanging around in this fourth match as the American finds a birdie at the par-five 13th to move within three of McIlroy who had a good chance himself for the birdie.

Ben Fleming1 October 2023 14:17

Scheffler leads up the last

Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler 1UP (17)

Rahm can’t convert his outside look at birdie on the 17th Scheffler has a putt for the win...just misses on the right. Down the last we go - can Rahm summon up some more last-hole heroics to salvage a half point.

Ben Fleming1 October 2023 14:12

Lowry back within one

Shane Lowry v Jordan Spieth 1UP (8)

Lowry is as animated as ever as he pours in another birdie on the 8th hole. He’s back to within just one of Jordan Spieth and the momentum is all with the Irishman.
