The Europeans were led from the front by an inspired Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy, who put captain Luke Donald’s side on the verge of victory.
But the Americans showed fight and character with the middle of the leaderboard turning into a sea of red, forcing Europe to hold their nerve and close it out.
After Max Homa denied Matt Fitzpatrick, who missed a putt to clinch the cup, the winning half-point was secured by Tommy Fleetwood down the stretch, getting Europe past the magic 14.5 mark with his victory over Rickie Fowler. And the final match was left to Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth, with the American snatching a half surrounded by chaos on the 18th as joyous European fans started the party in Rome.

Both Homa and Fitzpatrick go right with their second shots in the par five. The two found water on the 16th and clearly wanted to avoid doing so again on the last.

“Fitzpatrick wallops it 30 yards past Homa on 18, searching for a half to clinch this. His brother, Alex, whipping up support for him as he strides down the hill. Homa, 297 yards, right to left, going first might be preferable to slam the door on this match.”
Fleetwood extends lead over Fowler
2UP Tommy Fleetwood v Rickie Fowler (12)
Fleetwood with a massive birdie on the par-five 12th after Fowler finds trouble in the bunker. Europe now 2up in both those final two matches.
Nightmare miss for Clark doubles MacIntyre’s lead
2UP Robert MacIntyre v Wyndham Clark (11)
A huge moment in the anchor match as Clark races a small putt past the hole and MacIntyre has a two-hole lead once more.
Europe up to 14 points
Tyrrell Hatton beats 3&2 Brian Harman
A touch of brilliance from Hatton at just the right time as his bunker shot on the 16th rolls out to kick-in range. Harman is in the same bunker that Rose was in but unlike the Englishman, the Open champion can’t get up and down to keep the match going.
Hatton lets out a roar as he gets a crucial win to putt Europe on the brink. Just a half point needed for Europe now.

Two good looks at birdie for both. Fitzpatrick rolls his past and Homas has one for the match now...he misses too.

Fleetwood and MacIntyre leads just one
Both Fowler and Clark roll in putts on the 11th and 10th respectively to cut their deficits to just one against Fleetwood and MacIntyre.
With a sea of red in the middle matches, it may end up coming down to those final matches.

From the drop zone, Homas has a huge advantage as he nips his chip in close. But the American fails to take advantage to take a 2-hole lead and on they go.
Rory McIlroy beats Sam Burns 3&1
