The Europeans were led from the front by an inspired Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy, who put captain Luke Donald’s side on the verge of victory.
But the Americans showed fight and character with the middle of the leaderboard turning into a sea of red, forcing Europe to hold their nerve and close it out.
After Max Homa denied Matt Fitzpatrick, who missed a putt to clinch the cup, the winning half-point was secured by Tommy Fleetwood down the stretch, getting Europe past the magic 14.5 mark with his victory over Rickie Fowler. And the final match was left to Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth, with the American snatching a half surrounded by chaos on the 18th as joyous European fans started the party in Rome.

Hovland wins as Europe claims first singles point
Viktor Hovland beats Collin Morikawa 4&3
A bogey for Morikawa at the 15th and that is that in match number two. A dominant display from Hovland who caps off his stellar week in style. Europe move one step closer to regaining the trophy - three points is all they need now.
Hatton moves two ahead

“Hatton with a glorious wedge on 11, sticks it inside Harman, and chases up the hill to get a closer look, but the European fans roar in approval. Hatton is bouncing again, but then switches his focus back on, returns and helps an official to repair the divot.
“It’s conceded and Harman can’t make the tricky birdie look coming back, momentum back to Europe in a flash.”
Homa bogeys to drop hole
Matt Fitzpatrick v Max Homa 1UP (11)
God you have to love matchplay. It looked like the US were making good strides and now a positive 10 or 15 minutes for Europe. Fitzpatrick holes out well for his par on the 11th and he’s suddenly back to within one, too.
Rose back within one
Justin Rose v Patrick Cantlay 1UP (13)
And Rosey has another! He trickles in a birdie putt at the par-three 13th and in the space of a few moments, Cantlay’s lead is suddenly not so secure and just one.
Scheffler takes the lead
Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler 1 UP (15)
What a putt Scottie Scheffler! 20 feet and right in the heart of the hole as he taunts the European fans. The World No.1 takes a huge lead in that first match and things are just starting to get interesting here.
Cantlay gives one away
Justin Rose v Patrick Cantlay 2UP (12)
Cantlay blinks for the first time today as a short putt misses on the 12th. Can Rose make a further indent into the American’s lead?
Harmon holes out to stay in touch in sixth match
1UP Tyrrell Hatton v Brian Harman (10)

Is that the spark? A moment!? USA fans are delirious, Harman holes out on 10 to stay one down in this pivotal match. After hacking out from his wayward drive, Harman remains in touch, a half that feels like a win.
Hatton had made a sublime chip a moment earlier but spun immediately after that gut punch, swigging some water and marching up the hill to the 11th. U-S-A reverberates around Marco Simone once more.
Further down the board
Some encouraging few holes from the Europeans down the board. Lowry lets out a roar as he gets back to two down, while Fleetwood hits the front against Fowler. In the bottom match, MacIntyre has a nice two-hole lead through four holes.
Hovland misses out
4UP Viktor Hovland v Collin Morikawa (13)
Hard to critique a man who is four ahead through 13 but Hovland drops to his knees as a chance goes begging on the 14th. Still, he leads by four and is well in command of this one.
