Ryder Cup 2018 – as it happened: Europe triumph in Sunday singles

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Europe have won the 2018 Ryder Cup after a thrilling afternoon in the Sunday singles. After coming into the final day 10-6 behind, USA upped the pressure with early points on the board with wins for Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson and Tony Finau.
But the Europeans held their nerve as Jon Rahm, Ian Poulter and Thorbjorn Olesen all won their matches, and they sealed the trophy when Francesco Molinari beat Phil Mickelson when the American conceded 16th tee.

Who's going to win?
USA 10/1
Europe 1/6
Draw 14/1
Thorbjorn Olesen (2UP) vs Jordan Spieth
The unlikely star continues to shine. Thorbjorn Olesen is just a fingertip from chipping in at the fifth but his birdie still beats the currently inaccurate Spieth.
Ian Poulter vs Dustin Johnson (A/S)
Jonathan Liew is following this one:
Signs of life from Dustin Johnson! Two down to Poulter after four and looking very far from his best, he’s pulled it back to all square after six. A big 30-footer downhill for birdie at the 5th, and now Poulter’s missed a little five-footer for par. Momentum shift here?
Justin Rose vs Webb Simpson (3UP)
A glimmer of hope for Rose at the ninth but he can't find the birdie and a much needed look-in goes begging.
Francesco Molinari (2UP) vs Phil Mickelson
This could turn into a bit of a pasting with the contrasting form of these two. Molinari finds a birdie at the par-5 third and Mickelson has no answer.
Rory McIlroy vs Justin Thomas (A/S)
Ed Malyon is with the key leading match-up:
My goodness, what a shot that is from Rory McIlroy. Justin Thomas plays a beauty onto the island green at 13 and then McIlroy sticks one past Thomas, but it has enough spin to sit down, grip and roll back in line with JT's approach - about half the distance to the hole. Magnificent battle in match one.
Tommy Fleetwood vs Tony Finau (4UP)
I don't think there's any way back for Fleetwood from here but it's not his fault this time. Finau has just holed a monster birdie putt at the eighth and he's running away with it.
Rory McIlroy (1UP) vs Justin Thomas
Thomas is pumped up ahead of his putting duel with McIlroy on the thirteenth. He knows McIlroy has a good chance of birdie and Thomas has put way too much mustard on that. It's flown about 6ft past and he can't hole the return. An ugly three-putt and a freebie for McIlroy who missed the birdie as well.
Rory McIlroy (1UP) vs Justin Thomas
Ed Malyon:
Justin Thomas just threw his ball in the water in disgust! Yes, he's now one behind McIlroy after three-putting on 13.
