Richarlison’s first goals for Tottenham saw them mark their Champions League return with a 2-0 win over 10-man Marseille.

The summer signing scored two headers in the space of five second-half minutes to get Spurs out of trouble in their Group D opener.

Playing at the elite level for the first time since 2020, Antonio Conte’s men were labouring against the Ligue 1 side, who had Chancel Mbemba sent off early in the second half.

But Richarlison, making his Champions League debut, opened his account for the club in the 76th minute from Ivan Perisic’s cross and then repeated the trick to kill the game from a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg delivery.

His double ensured Spurs got their campaign off to a winning start in an otherwise largely difficult round of action for British teams.

Relive the action as Spurs win their opening Champions League fixture:

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille

52 mins: Eric Bailly was also booked for dissent in the aftermath of the red card and now Eric Dier goes into the referee’s book as he clatters a Marseille player near halfway. The intensity has definitely been upped.

Veretout sticks the free-kick into the box, aiming for Bailly, but it goes harmlessly through to Lloris.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille

49 mins: The free-kick comes to nothing but Spurs surge forward again and win a corner. This should change the complexion of the game.

Marseille make a sub as Gerson off for Leonardo Balerdi. Attacker off, defender on.

RED CARD! Tottenham 0-0 Marseille - (Chancel Mbemba 47’ 🟥)

47 mins: You’d expect Spurs to come out with more intensity in this second half. Kane immediately drops deep and spreads the ball out wide to Perisic.

Kane then slips the ball through to Son, who is racing in on goal. Mbema slides in from behind and cynically hacks him down! Clear professional foul and it’s a RED CARD for Mbemba. Well deserved.

Kick-off: Spurs players out early for the second half. Hopefully Antonio Conte has stuck a rocket up them at half-time. Back underway

Joey Barton in the crowd

This is probably the most interesting thing that happened in the first half - Joey Barton was spotted among the Marseille fans

There wasn’t much of it to be honest...

HALF-TIME: Tottenham 0-0 Marseille

Half-time: One final chance before half-time for Marseille and Guendouzi rifles one from long range but Lloris down smartly to his right and pushes the ball away.

And that’s the half-time whistle. Fairly uninspiring stuff

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille

45 mins: A nice ball into the left channel gets Son streaking down the flank but good strength by Mbemba to stop him and win the ball back.

One minute of added time to be played at the end of this first half.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille

43 mins: A Marseille free-kick into the box half-cleared and Guendouzi strikes it but well blocked. Gerson then dinks a lovely ball towards Tavares at the back post but a sliding Royal swings a leg and puts the Marseille man off enough that the ball runs through for a goal kick.

Tavares has looked bright so far, you can see why Marseille like him.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille

40 mins: CHANCE! The closest Spurs have come by far. Richarlison slips the ball to Son and it’s two on two for Spurs. He finds Kane, who dummies one way and tries to bend one into the far corner but his shot curls wide. You’d expect better from the England skipper there.
