Tottenham vs Marseille LIVE: Champions League result, final score and reaction as Richarlison double seals Spurs win
Tottenham 2-0 Marseille: Antonio Conte’s Spurs get the perfect start to their Champions League return thanks to Richarlison’s two headers
Richarlison’s first goals for Tottenham saw them mark their Champions League return with a 2-0 win over 10-man Marseille.
The summer signing scored two headers in the space of five second-half minutes to get Spurs out of trouble in their Group D opener.
Playing at the elite level for the first time since 2020, Antonio Conte’s men were labouring against the Ligue 1 side, who had Chancel Mbemba sent off early in the second half.
But Richarlison, making his Champions League debut, opened his account for the club in the 76th minute from Ivan Perisic’s cross and then repeated the trick to kill the game from a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg delivery.
His double ensured Spurs got their campaign off to a winning start in an otherwise largely difficult round of action for British teams.
Relive the action as Spurs win their opening Champions League fixture:
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
74 mins: CHANCE! Panic in the Spurs six-yard box as Guendouzi’s cross causes havoc, Davies misses it, Harit has a chance to turn it in but can’t, no-one can get their foot on the ball and eventually Perisic scrambles it away.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
72 mins: Marseille look organised and tough to break down. Spurs need to show more creativity though.
Ben Davies and Japhet Tanganga on for Clement Lenglet and Cristian Romero. Simply fresh legs and allows Spurs to switch to a back four should they wish.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
69 mins: More jeers from the Spurs fans as a goal-kick takes an age and then Jonathan Clauss takes his time heading off the pitch after being subbed for Saed Kolasinac. Clauss gets a yellow card for ignoring the ref’s instruction to leave the pitch at the nearest point, instead going to the halfway line.
Another Marseille sub sees Amine Harit come on for Luis Suarez. Spurs readying their own double sub.
WATCH: Mbemba sent off for hacking down Son
Here’s how Marseille were reduced to 10 men.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
68 mins: Dangerous ball in from Perisic but it’s nodded clear and Kane’s follow-up cross is also scrambled away. Son then dribbles straight into a defender and gives the ball away. Not his night (or season) so far.
Kulusevski is causing Marseille issues whipping crosses in from the right with his left foot. That one is slightly overhit but a lovely shape on it.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
65 mins: Marseille already using every trick in the book in terms of taking their time over throws, staying down after tackles. There’s a long time left though.
Great run by Kulusevski down the right, skips past his man to the by-line and only a sliding defender blocks it wide. From the corner, Kulusevski whips a cross in that takes a slight deflection and goes behind. It’s clearly off a Marseille player but goal-kick given, Son is livid with the referee and gets a yellow card for dissent.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
62 mins: Romero with a brilliant searching, diagonal ball that frees Perisic down the left. Perisic misjudges the ball - if he brings it down, he can get a strike at goal - but it bounces so he loops it into the area where Richarlison heads at goal. He can’t get any power on it though and it’s harmlessly wide.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
60 mins: Spurs’s second-half possession is up to 74% now, compared to 40% in the first half... Royal puts a dangerous cross in from the right but the referee whistles for a foul as Hojbjerg jumps for it.
Kulusevski does indeed come on, in place of Royal. Presumably he’ll play at right wing-back, at least initially
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
58 mins: Marseille players will be looking to slow this down at every opportunity. Bailly hits the floor after a slight clip from Kane when they’re about to jump for the ball and he stays down for a good 30 seconds. Gigot then clutches his thigh after winning another free-kick.
Dejan Kulusevski readying himself to come on for Spurs.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
55 mins: Spurs come forward again and Son takes a shot from about 25 yards, left of centre but he drags it wide of the post. He looks annoyed with himself and will be desperate to break his goal duck this season.
