Tottenham vs Marseille LIVE: Champions League result, final score and reaction as Richarlison double seals Spurs win
Tottenham 2-0 Marseille: Antonio Conte’s Spurs get the perfect start to their Champions League return thanks to Richarlison’s two headers
Richarlison’s first goals for Tottenham saw them mark their Champions League return with a 2-0 win over 10-man Marseille.
The summer signing scored two headers in the space of five second-half minutes to get Spurs out of trouble in their Group D opener.
Playing at the elite level for the first time since 2020, Antonio Conte’s men were labouring against the Ligue 1 side, who had Chancel Mbemba sent off early in the second half.
But Richarlison, making his Champions League debut, opened his account for the club in the 76th minute from Ivan Perisic’s cross and then repeated the trick to kill the game from a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg delivery.
His double ensured Spurs got their campaign off to a winning start in an otherwise largely difficult round of action for British teams.
Relive the action as Spurs win their opening Champions League fixture:
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
39 mins: Tavares gets space to run down the left flank after Son gives the ball away and his cross towards the edge of the area is well defended by a retreating Perisic. He read that well and cut the ball out.
Another Tavares cross is a bit deeper and this time Lloris claims the ball nicely. Didn’t punch that one!
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
38 mins: Royal hacked down by Tavares after the Marseille man loses the ball. A free-kick near the right touchline but Son’s delivery is poor and easily headed clear.
Marseille with a sustained spell of possession in Spurs territory but the hosts pack men behind the ball.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
35 mins: Nice movement from Richarlison and he cuts inside where a speculative shot is blocked. Kane also tries from distance, blocked again.
Spurs win it back, Kane cuts into the box from the right but again the Marseille defence is good as his shot is blocked by Tavares. It lifts the Spurs fans though, as “Come on you Spurs” rings round the stadium.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
33 mins: Neat interplay allows Veretout to whip in a cross, it comes out to the edge of the area where Guendouzi strikes it, it’s blocked up in the air and, under no pressure, Lloris inexplicably decides to punch rather than catch the ball. It’s a poor punch but Spurs scramble it away and Richarlison wins a free-kick near halfway to relieve the pressure.
Opening night nerves from Spurs is what this looks like.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
30 mins: Gerson moves forward but runs into a Bentancur-shaped brick wall. Spurs can’t hold on to the ball though and a speculative Marseille shot is deflected behind for a corner. Veretout’s cross is too high for a leaping Mbemba and Spurs press their way out of danger.
30 minutes gone and not much to report from this game.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
26 mins: Spurs’s first shot of the game but it’s nothing to write home about as Richarlison’s attempt skews across the face of goal and doesn’t even go out of play. It’s put back into the box and Kane goes up with keeper Lopez, who fumbles the ball initially but then dives on it.
To be fair, Kane caught Lopez with an accidental flick of the hand as he jumped, there’s a small cut above the goalkeeper’s eye so the physio is on to clean it up. No real harm done though and nothing in it.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
24 mins: Marseille win a free-kick wide on the left but a training ground move fails spectacularly and a misplaced pass soars out of play. Sarcastic jeers from the home crowd.
Spurs need to get their foot on the ball but the Marseille press is giving them no time and their passes lack sharpness.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
21 mins: Good defending by Emerson Royal. Tavares glides forward, skips past a lazy leg dangled out by Bentancur but, as he reaches the edge of the area, Royal slides from behind and hooks the ball away.
Spurs are having the play dictated to them at the minute which will be a frustration for Antonio Conte. Nuno Tavares looks like a completely different (read: competent) player to the one we saw at Arsenal last year.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
19 mins: Gerson finds Suarez with a nice ball forward and Marseille win the attacking throw-in. Nuno Tavares opts to take aim from distance and Lloris dives but it’s comfortably wide.
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
18 mins: Richarlison strides forward but his attempted ball through to Kane is cut out. Bentancur then shanks a pass out of play. There’s definitely space in behind Marseille to exploit but Spurs just haven’t managed to so far.
At the other end, the visitors are looking fairly blunt despite their possession.
