From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Newcastle United host Arsenal in the 1330 BST kick-off at St James’ Park with both sides on the fringes of their respective Premier League battles.

For the Gunners, the top four is now out of sight and they are content with chasing Chelsea in fifth above them while holding off the charge of Burnley from below.

Newcastle meanwhile are sitting pretty above the relegation scrap, seemingly safe on 38 points, and can now target a top-half finish which would be an impressive achievement from a squad which many experts tipped to struggle this season.

46: We're back underway.

49: Newcastle have had the better start to the second half. Again, they have pressed Arsenal well but it's a scrappy start.

Here we go... Although on this performance, this is not a bad shout

Jack Watson15 April 2018 14:41

56: Not too much to shout about at the moment. Arsenal have had 80% of the possession since the break but have rarely ventured into attacking positions, I suppose that's what happens when you rest your good players.

Newcastle are struggling to get Kennedy or Jonjo Shelvey into the game but do appear energetic when they turn the ball over.

62: The home side are starting to add a bit of rhythm to their play and a string of passes gets the home crowd going. Again, Jonjo Shelvey to Dwight Gayle is looking like the combination which can trouble Arsenal, it's just missing some quality and final product.

63: Another game goes by where Dwight Gayle has not found the net, but his effort this afternoon has been very good. He's replaced by Islam Slimani who missed last week's win against Leicester as he is unable to play against his parent club.

65: Jonjo Shelvey's long ball is knocked down to Matt Ritchie who tries to find the back of the net with an audacious half-volley, but instead finds the back of the stand.

67: Alex Iwobi drifts in from the left and flashes a shot wide. I make that Arsenal's first decent effort of the half.

67: Joe Willock's Premier League debut is over, he's replaced by Danny Welbeck.

Newcastle 2-1 Arsenal

Matt Ritchie puts Newcastle into the lead!

Nacho Monreal's headed clearance is met by Islam Slimani who heads the ball back into the danger area. Ayoze Perez flicks the ball onto Matt Ritchie who makes no mistake with the finish from inside the area and fires the ball over Petr Cech.

Newcastle take a deserved lead and reach 41 points, as it stands.
