Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Rafa Benitez will most likely put his entire team behind the ball and look to stop Manchester City for as long as possible in hope of a fortuitous goal or clean sheet for Newcastle.

He did this last season and last week against Chelsea, where he was criticised for his negative style of play after Wolves drew with City after a bold attacking performance.

“Last season he did it against us away and at home,” said Pep Guardiola on Benitez’s tactics. “Everything he is going to do is because he believes it’s the best for them to get points.”

We'll have all the latest from the Etihad:

City creating chances and they break out from the back with Fernandinho laying a delightful pass into the path of Riyadh Mahrez who pulls inside from the right hand side but scuffs his shot wide of the post.

Good chance gone.

More to come? Probably.

Do you like stats?

Well, you might do, but if you're a Newcastle fan you won't enjoy this one.

The Toon army have only accumulated 3 points from a possible 63 in their past 21 matches against Manchester City.

In other words, they don't like playing against Manchester City.

GOAL! Manchester City 1-0 Newcastle (Sterling, 7)

It's just glorious from Raheem Sterling. He gets fed by Benjamin Mendy (yes, that's another assist for him, too) and Sterling cuts inside from the left hand-side and like his goal against Arsenal he smashes it into the corner with his right foot.

Big celebrations. Big goal.

Long ole game left.

Newcastle are completely on the ropes. Lascelles is making errors and the defenders look worried by the wave of City attacks.

We're 12 minutes in and it is just dominance.

Are they trying to beat their Huddersfield score? Probably, yes.

16 mins: I'd like to tell you that Newcastle have caused a threat as the game settles but no, City are just retaining possession and will be looking to breakthrough again at some point.

CHANCE! And there's your chance!

Aguero lays it off to Jesus who runs onto it and beats his defender with a wonderful dummy.

Facing Dubravka well inside the box, Jesus' left footed attempt is just a bit tame and the Newcastle stopper gets down well to stop it.

25 mins: I'll give Newcastle their dues. They've settled a little bit into this game - not creating much, but keeping the ball a bit better.

As a say this, David Silva delightfully turns on the edge of the box and Diame fells him pretty dramatically and yet no yellow card has been brandished.

Free kick - dangerous area.

CHANCE! And it's another one for Gabriel Jesus.

David Silva, the magician, floats in a lovely ball over the heads of the Newcastle defenders and it falls to the head of the Brazilian striker.

Sadly for him, the ball seems to come off his face and bounce to Dubravka with no difficulty.

30 mins: GOAL! Manchester City 1-1 Newcastle (Yedlin, 30)

WOW.
