Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Rafa Benitez will most likely put his entire team behind the ball and look to stop Manchester City for as long as possible in hope of a fortuitous goal or clean sheet for Newcastle.

He did this last season and last week against Chelsea, where he was criticised for his negative style of play after Wolves drew with City after a bold attacking performance.

“Last season he did it against us away and at home,” said Pep Guardiola on Benitez’s tactics. “Everything he is going to do is because he believes it’s the best for them to get points.”

We'll have all the latest from the Etihad:

Prediction

Manchester City 3-0 Newcastle

I can't believe what I'm seeing but Newcastle have improved as City have slowed ever so slightly and the Toon army have taken advantage.

Fantastic touch from Kenedy who gives the ball to Rondon who takes his time and spots the incoming Yedlin running down the right hand side.

What a great cross it was to the incoming run of Yedlin and he's smashed it beyond Ederson.

Well, well, well. I didn't see that one coming, I must say.

32 mins: City have a corner and are keeping the ball once again but the early positive runnings have definitely slowed a touch.

33 mins: Free-kick to City.

34 mins: Corner now...

35 mins: Corner falls to Fernandinho who's the first man but it bounces off him and out into touch.

35 minutes played and Newcastle are still level with City.

38 mins: Great work from Perez should've resulted in a Newcastle corner but Stones covered himself well and City get the goal kick.

42 mins: Positive play from Sterling leads to a Manchester City free-kick but that seems harsh as the ball was won fairly.

What can they offer from here?

43 mins: Walker's Freekick is punched out by the commanding Dubravka and Newcastle regroup.

Improved as the game went on.

45 mins: David Silva was slipped in behind the Newcastle defence and he whipped in a strong ball to the box which Dubravka pushed straight back into the box.

No City players around him to pick up the pieces though.

1 minute of additional time.

HALF TIME: Manchester City 1-1 Newcastle United

A slightly surprising halftime scoreline at the Etihad as Manchester City are being held by Newcastle after taking an early lead.

Raheem Sterling gave the Citizens the lead with a well taken right-footed curler but Newcastle hit back from a great goal of their own as a marauding Yedlin fired beyond Ederson.

Newcastle really improved as the half went on and will be really proud of their performance so far.
