Danny Welbeck's first-half goal against the run of play gave Brighton & Hove Albion a 1-0 win at Newcastle United, with the home side's lack of sharpness in front of goal extending their winless streak to four Premier League games.

With striker Alexander Isak back after a period out with a toe injury, Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges but struggled to convert their plentiful possession into shots on target, and Welbeck showed them how it should be done in the 35th minute, muscling into the box to slip the ball past Nick Pope and give Brighton the lead.

Newcastle's accuracy improved in the second half but the shots they managed on target lacked power and precision, while Brighton looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line.

Dan Burn finally got the ball into the Brighton net in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time but he was well offside and the goal was chalked off as the Seagulls hung on for a win that moves them up to fifth in the table on 15 points, while Newcastle remain eighth on 12.

Tonali sprints through the middle third of the pitch, and eventually, the ball breaks to Gordon on the left again. He tries a cross, but a free-kick is then given to Brighton for a foul by Isak.

Eddie Howe makes two changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Everton last time out as Isak and Livramento join the starting lineup in place of Barnes and Trippier. The familiar midfield trio for Newcastle remains, with Guimaraes captaining the team, and Pope makes his 200th Premier League appearance. Lewis Miley also returns to the bench after a period on the sidelines. Adam Webster’s injury means that Julio takes his spot in the Brighton starting lineup. Minteh and Mitoma have also been moved to the bench after starting the last game against Tottenham. They are replaced by Ayari and Ferguson, causing a formation change for Hurzeler’s side. Rutter and Welbeck start again, following a goal each last time out.

Eddie Howe, like his counterpart, will be pleased with how his side have started the campaign; they are in seventh spot in the league table. Although it is still early in the competition, Newcastle have already produced impressive results in the league against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Newcastle will view this match as a big chance to continue their positive start and put themselves back in contention for a European place, something that they missed out on last season.
