Danny Welbeck's first-half goal against the run of play gave Brighton & Hove Albion a 1-0 win at Newcastle United, with the home side's lack of sharpness in front of goal extending their winless streak to four Premier League games.

With striker Alexander Isak back after a period out with a toe injury, Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges but struggled to convert their plentiful possession into shots on target, and Welbeck showed them how it should be done in the 35th minute, muscling into the box to slip the ball past Nick Pope and give Brighton the lead.

Newcastle's accuracy improved in the second half but the shots they managed on target lacked power and precision, while Brighton looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line.

Dan Burn finally got the ball into the Brighton net in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time but he was well offside and the goal was chalked off as the Seagulls hung on for a win that moves them up to fifth in the table on 15 points, while Newcastle remain eighth on 12.

If the game carries on in the way that it’s started, it is surely only a matter of time until Newcastle open the scoring. They have been utterly dominant.

Newcastle are so far up the pitch that Schar and Burn just combined inside the box to create an opportunity. Brighton cannot seem to get out of their box, let alone their half!

Newcastle have a barrage of shots blocked as they seek an opener. Guimaraes and Gordon were amongst those to have efforts stopped on the edge of the box. Brighton are sitting very deep as they hold on.

HUGE CHANCE! A cross comes in from the left side for Newcastle and Guimaraes flicks it on with a header. Isak doesn’t react to the chance quickly enough and misses the ball completely on the volley. That could’ve easily been 1-0!

Calls of handball against Kadioglu inside the Brighton box as Tonali took him on. The referee doesn’t give a penalty, and the VAR checks and clears the call straight away.

CHANCE! Gordon cuts a pass back to Isak, who strikes with his left foot, and it looks to be heading in, but it is blocked by his own player as Murphy gets in the way!

Julio tempts fate as he attempts to dribble the ball out of defence. Isak looks to have stolen possession from him but the ball rolls out for a throw.
