Danny Welbeck's first-half goal against the run of play gave Brighton & Hove Albion a 1-0 win at Newcastle United, with the home side's lack of sharpness in front of goal extending their winless streak to four Premier League games.

With striker Alexander Isak back after a period out with a toe injury, Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges but struggled to convert their plentiful possession into shots on target, and Welbeck showed them how it should be done in the 35th minute, muscling into the box to slip the ball past Nick Pope and give Brighton the lead.

Newcastle's accuracy improved in the second half but the shots they managed on target lacked power and precision, while Brighton looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line.

Dan Burn finally got the ball into the Brighton net in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time but he was well offside and the goal was chalked off as the Seagulls hung on for a win that moves them up to fifth in the table on 15 points, while Newcastle remain eighth on 12.

Fabian Hurzeler’s team has started this Premier League campaign in a brilliant fashion; he will be very pleased with his side. In the last Premier League game, they managed to overcome a two goal deficit to win against Tottenham Hotspur. They have picked up points against other notable opponents such as Manchester United and Arsenal this season. However, it is of course still early days in this season’s competition, and there is plenty of time for things to change across the league table. This game is a massive opportunity to create a gap between themselves and Newcastle, pushing them closer to the European spots.

The last time these two sides faced each other was on the 11th of May, at the tail-end of last season. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, as Sean Longstaff cancelled out Joel Veltman’s early goal on the stroke of halftime. The pair are now competing at the top end of the table in the early exchanges of the season, having started very well. Brighton sit sixth in the league with 12 points, and the home team, Newcastle, is closely following them. They also sit on 12 points with the same win record as their opponents (3W, 3D, L1). Brighton have shown ruthlessness in front of goal but also defensive instability, conceding 10 goals in seven games, pointing towards an exciting game.
