Danny Welbeck's first-half goal against the run of play gave Brighton & Hove Albion a 1-0 win at Newcastle United, with the home side's lack of sharpness in front of goal extending their winless streak to four Premier League games.
With striker Alexander Isak back after a period out with a toe injury, Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges but struggled to convert their plentiful possession into shots on target, and Welbeck showed them how it should be done in the 35th minute, muscling into the box to slip the ball past Nick Pope and give Brighton the lead.
Newcastle's accuracy improved in the second half but the shots they managed on target lacked power and precision, while Brighton looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line.
Dan Burn finally got the ball into the Brighton net in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time but he was well offside and the goal was chalked off as the Seagulls hung on for a win that moves them up to fifth in the table on 15 points, while Newcastle remain eighth on 12.

Looking to the second half, Hurzeler will want his team to reduce the number of chances they’re giving away or go and get another goal to close the game out. The feeling is that if the game continues in this fashion, Newcastle will surely equalise. As for Howe, he needs his attackers to step up and seize some of the opportunities that his creative players are making. Coming away from this game with no points won would be painful for them due to their dominance in the first period.

45 minutes have come and gone at St. James’ Park and Brighton will be delighted with the result at the break. They have managed to withstand several Newcastle chances and even more attacks. In the 35th minute, Welbeck reminded Newcastle that goals win games, and he combined with Rutter before sliding the ball past Pope to give his side the lead. Newcastle continued to press with intent, but a couple of missed chances from Isak and a good save by Verbruggen meant that Brighton went in at half-time leading 1-0.

Another yellow card is shown in the direction of Ayari, because of a foul on Guimaraes where he got nowhere near the ball. There were no arguments from the Brighton man.
