Manchester United vs Sevilla LIVE: Result and reaction as own goals cost United in Europa League quarter-final

In his 73rd match in all European competitions, Marcel Sabitzer has scored his second brace, previously scoring twice in March 2020 for RB Leipzig against Tottenham in the Champions League.

The whistle goes and United will be thankful to De Gea for preserving what was an excellent half for the hosts. They are two goals to the good and in full command of this quarter-final tie. Two goals from Sabitzer were the difference against an out-of-sorts Sevilla side who also narrowly avoided going down to ten men following a VAR check on a challenge by Lamela.

Sevilla have it all to do in the second half but United will now look to add another goal and put one foot in the semi-final after only the first leg.

45+3 mins: SAVE! Right on the brink of half-time and it’s De Gea with a great reaction save to keep United’s two-goal advantage. Nianzou’s gets to the cross first at the near post but De Gea reacts well to parry the effort up before Varane clears it away off the line. What an important clearance!

45 mins: There is two minutes of added time to end this first half.

41 mins: A big yellow card for United and Fernandes will now miss the second leg. Gudelj strikes it from outside the box and it hits the arm of the United captain. He’s given a yellow card but it seems very harsh on the Portuguese midfielder who was only yards away from the strike.

Rakitic curls the resulting free-kick over the bar.

40 mins: Check over: no red card. That feels like the right decision - it was clumsy from Lamela but there was certainly no malice and the contact did not appear to be too heavy.

38 mins: Lamela and Casemiro get tangled and the United midfielder comes off worse. Replays show the Argentine caught Casemiro with his studs. He’s initially shown a yellow card but there is a VAR check for a red card...

34 mins: Sevilla are all at sea defensively and United can really put this game to bed. Sancho can’t get a shot off inside the box but the play is recycled and Martial feeds the onrushing Casemiro whose firm shot is deflected behind for a corner.

32 mins: Wan-Bissaka and Antony combine on the right and the Brazilian whips a ball towards the back post. It’s nocked back to Fernandes but his pocked effort doesn’t have enough power and Bono is able to clear it away.

31 mins: Sevilla give away the ball cheaply and United break again with pace. Sancho gets cramped for room at the end, though, and his right-footed effort is blocked by the recovering defenders.
