Mohamed Salah replied late in the day but it was not enough to prevent defeat for the visitors on a memorable night for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The match was preceeded by a protest by United fans: anger among supporters at the ownership of the Glazer family is growing with each passing day and a protest was organised by underground fan group ‘The 1958’ ahead of tonight’s game. They marched from The Tollgate to The Trinity to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the Glazers and demand that the Americans sell up.
During the build-up to tonight’s match, Sky Sports broadcast an exclusive interview with Man Utd boss Ten Hag, conducted by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, grilling the Dutchman following the club’s dismal start to the campaign that has seen them outclassed in defeats to Brighton and Brentford. And the manager made a big call this evening by dropping captain Harry Maguire and superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench, which was vindicated by the result.

45+1 mins: The half-time break arrives with Manchester United taking a one goal lead off the pitch. Liverpool rallied to control the final 15 minutes of the half but they’ve got work to do at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag will be incredibly pleased with what he’s just seen from his team.

43 mins: Close! Liverpool almost get incredible lucky from the corner. The cross is whipped to the back post and headed back over to the far side of the six yard box.
It bounces to Bruno Fernandes who tries to clear it. He can’t wrap his foot around the ball and drills it at his own goal but Martinez is waiting on the line and the ball whacks him in the chest before he can clear the rebound.

40 mins: Chance! Mo Salah drifts into the box as Alexander-Arnold brings the ball down the right side. He squares it across to Firmino who lays the ball off to Salah but his shot is deflected behind by Lisandro Martinez.
The United defenders all applaud each other for keeping it out.

37 mins: Luis Diaz presses Raphael Varane high up the pitch and wins Liverpool a corner. The visitors have slowly turned the momentum around and United are on the back foot.
Liverpool haven’t created many clear chances at goal yet though. David De Gea has had a quiet night.

34 mins: It’s not quite clicked for Liverpool yet. They haven’t been their fluid selves but this is a good move. Diaz plays it across to Henderson who knocks it to Harvey Elliott. He turns the ball over to Mo Salah who slides Alexander-Arnold into the box.
He pulls it back to Elliott who shoots but has his effort blocked.

31 mins: Diogo Dalot puts the ball out ofr play and gives Liverpool their first corner of the game. It’s whipped into the box and Jordan Henderson looks to flick it on but the ball is too far out of reach for him.

28 mins: Raphael Varane joins Trent Alexander-Arnold in the book for a lunge on Luis Diaz. Liverpool fail to fully capitalise on the free kick but they’re seeing more of the ball now.

The Red Devils win another free kick - for a tackle that earned Alexander-Arnold a yellow card - and Eriksen whips his shot right over to the far corner.
Alisson leaps to his left and manages to tip the ball just past the post.

22 mins: Sancho knocks the ball over to the edge of the box where Marcus Rashford collects it and drills one at goal only to see his effort stopped by Joe Gomez.
