From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Manchester United beat Liverpool in the Premier League this evening thanks to Jadon Sancho’s early goal and Marcus Rashford’s second-half strike. Mohamed Salah replied late in the day but it was not enough to prevent defeat for the visitors on a memorable night for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The match was preceeded by a protest by United fans: anger among supporters at the ownership of the Glazer family is growing with each passing day and a protest was organised by underground fan group ‘The 1958’ ahead of tonight’s game. They marched from The Tollgate to The Trinity to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the Glazers and demand that the Americans sell up.

During the build-up to tonight’s match, Sky Sports broadcast an exclusive interview with Man Utd boss Ten Hag, conducted by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, grilling the Dutchman following the club’s dismal start to the campaign that has seen them outclassed in defeats to Brighton and Brentford. And the manager made a big call this evening by dropping captain Harry Maguire and superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench, which was vindicated by the result.

Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool

90 mins: David De Gea boots a goal kick long and Donny van de Beek wins the ball. It’s worked across to Cristiano Ronaldo who takes a touch and fires one at goal from range.

It’s a poor effort and belts it well wide of the target.

Five added minutes to play.

79 mins: There is a nervous energy around Old Trafford as Liverpool push United deep into their own half and work the ball around the edge of the box.

Andy Robertson gets free on the left side of the area and flicks the ball across to Firmino. He doesn’t get great contact but prods it at goal and De Gea palms it wide of the nearest post.

Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool

70 mins: Jadon Sancho is coming off for Man Utd with Fred being brought on to replace him. This should see a tactical change from Erik ten Hag too with Fred’s introduction seemingly shoring up the midfield as he slots in between Eriksen and McTominay.
