From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United beat Liverpool in the Premier League this evening thanks to Jadon Sancho’s early goal and Marcus Rashford’s second-half strike. Mohamed Salah replied late in the day but it was not enough to prevent defeat for the visitors on a memorable night for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The match was preceeded by a protest by United fans: anger among supporters at the ownership of the Glazer family is growing with each passing day and a protest was organised by underground fan group ‘The 1958’ ahead of tonight’s game. They marched from The Tollgate to The Trinity to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the Glazers and demand that the Americans sell up.

During the build-up to tonight’s match, Sky Sports broadcast an exclusive interview with Man Utd boss Ten Hag, conducted by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, grilling the Dutchman following the club’s dismal start to the campaign that has seen them outclassed in defeats to Brighton and Brentford. And the manager made a big call this evening by dropping captain Harry Maguire and superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench, which was vindicated by the result.

Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool

62 mins: Another counter-attack almost sees Man Utd in on goal again. Rashford, Sancho and Martial drive up the pitch with Martial in possession.

He drifts out to the right side before sliding the ball into Sancho. Sancho is closed down by two of Liverpool’s defenders but manages to dink the ball back over to Martial who takes it into the box.

He tries to check to the right and shoot but his first touch is poor and the ball rolls too far away from him allowing the Reds to clear their lines.

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to deliberately blank Jamie Carragher, one of his harshest critics, before Manchester United’s match against Liverpool on Monday night.

Ronaldo was dropped to the bench by new manager Erik ten Hag for the visit of the Liverpool to Old Trafford following United’s humiliation at Brentford and amid rumours he is looking to leave the club.

The striker still found time to greet Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Roy Keane broadcasting on the touchline before kick-off, but ignored former Liverpool defender Carragher.
