From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Manchester United beat Liverpool in the Premier League this evening thanks to Jadon Sancho’s early goal and Marcus Rashford’s second-half strike. Mohamed Salah replied late in the day but it was not enough to prevent defeat for the visitors on a memorable night for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The match was preceeded by a protest by United fans: anger among supporters at the ownership of the Glazer family is growing with each passing day and a protest was organised by underground fan group ‘The 1958’ ahead of tonight’s game. They marched from The Tollgate to The Trinity to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the Glazers and demand that the Americans sell up.

During the build-up to tonight’s match, Sky Sports broadcast an exclusive interview with Man Utd boss Ten Hag, conducted by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, grilling the Dutchman following the club’s dismal start to the campaign that has seen them outclassed in defeats to Brighton and Brentford. And the manager made a big call this evening by dropping captain Harry Maguire and superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench, which was vindicated by the result.

Manchester United rediscover pride and promise after bouncing back from lowest ebb

Manchester United‘s hitherto miserable start to this new season had provoked plenty of debate about Erik ten Hag‘s style of play. Is David de Gea comfortable enough with the ball at his feet? Do Lisandro Martinez’s abilities in build-up make up for his small stature? Is Christian Eriksen a false nine, a false six or just a symbol of yet another false dawn?

But at a time when the intricacies of each and every manager’s tactical philosophy are pored over, sometimes it really is a lot more simple than that. Sometimes it is about pride.

That may sound like basic, facile analysis, maybe even the type of under-thinking that has dominated at Old Trafford for the best part of a decade and reduced the most successful club of the Premier League era to the pile of rubble witnessed in west London.

Liverpool’s defensive frailties exposed by Manchester United as stuttering start becomes a sorry one

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lost the ability to do it. Ralf Rangnick rarely managed it. Erik ten Hag certainly hadn’t come remotely close in his first two games in charge. Then Liverpool came along and, within minutes, made Manchester United look a good team.

And then a seriously good one.

If Ten Hag and his relentless group of players were the architects of one of the most surprising home wins in decades at Old Trafford, Liverpool ensured that, as in both games last season, one of these sides left the pitch embarrassed.

Then it was United, 5-0 and 4-0 thrashings providing perhaps the worst days in a campaign littered with humiliations. Now it was Liverpool. A new regime at United was kickstarted by the ineptitude of the tormentors of the old.

A first league defeat of 2022 leaves them below United in the table. A stuttering start to the season has become a sorry one.

Erik ten Hag era receives belated lift-off as Manchester United beat Liverpool

As Jadon Sancho so deftly changed direction, he may well have changed the course of a season. Liverpool, like James Milner and Alisson, were left sprawling into the wrong direction and looking up at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag’s side were finally looking forward, looking much so much better, and just picking up speed.

That was the story of this stirring 2-1 victory, that absolutely transforms the mood around these two great rivals.

United are resurgent, sparked by the electrical charge of their own acceleration. Liverpool are forced into reverse, as they struggled to keep up, and possibly forced into a crisis of their own too.

Manchester United vs Liverpool player ratings: Marcus Rashford returns to form in Red Devils victory

Manchester United picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 home win over Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday night.

The Red Devils started fast in a loud atmosphere and took a deserved lead when Jadon Sancho sold a couple of defenders a dummy and buried his finish inside the near post.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were struggling to get a foothold in the match initially, though improved before the break - only for Marcus Rashford to race clear and hammer in a second soon after the restart.

FT Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool

Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho spoke to Sky Sports after the match and siad: “It means a lot. Our first two games didn’t go so well and had it turn it around today.

“Last week hurt a lot and we knew we had to bounce back and tonight we showed the fans what we can do. I didn’t realise how much time I had, but once I dropped the defender I needed the composure to finish.

“It means a lot to all of us, you can see how the fans are reacting. We got the three points but on to the next one. We just have to produce like today in every single game. Happy we got the three points and we move on.”
