Intensity so important against Dyche's Everton - Klopp

Liverpool belatedly secured their first Premier League win of 2023 as goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo condemned Sean Dyche to a first defeat as Everton boss in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield.

Salah fired Liverpool into the lead as he finished a counter-attack just 17 seconds after Everton defender James Tarkowski hit the post at the other end.

And Gakpo doubled the Reds’ lead shortly after half time with his first Liverpool goal, finishing a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold at the back post.

Everton, who remain in the bottom three, barely threatened after going behind but Tom Davies missed a free header at the back post late on.

Jurgen Klopp’s side move above Chelsea into ninth in the Premier League table while Everton remain in trouble in the relegation zone ahead of a six-pointer against Leeds on Saturday.

Follow all the reaction from the Merseyside Derby below:

Everton try to respond with another set piece that is curled over to James Tarkowski. He leaves Gakpo in his dust but Alisson leaps in front of him and punches the ball away.

HT Liverpool 1-0 Everton

Mo Salah has become the 13th player to be involved in 100 Premier League goals at a single stadium (71 goals, 29 assists at Anfield).

He’s done so in 104 appearances, with only Alan Shearer (74 at Ewood Park) and Thierry Henry (92 at Highbury) doing so in fewer.

Everton have been trailing 34 times in the Merseyside derby at half-time. Only once have they come back to win the game. Can they do so a second time tonight?

Half-time: Liverpool 1-0 Everton

45+1 mins: Everton’s main threat has come from set pieces but they’ll need to be more adventurous now that they’re chasing the game.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool will be very pleased. Another goal could kill off the game and Mo Salah is back in the goals.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

42 mins: “Going down, going down, going down,” is the chant coming from the Liverpool fans. Everton will be stuck in the relegation zone if they don’t pick up a point against the Reds tonight.

James Tarkowski lunges into a tackle on Jordan Henderson but cleans out the man. He’s lucky not to get booked there.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

39 mins: That’ll be a tough one for Everton to take. They came within a couple of inches of taking the lead but a rapid counter-attack has undone them.

Liverpool will want a second one to really drive home their lead.
