Intensity so important against Dyche's Everton - Klopp

Liverpool belatedly secured their first Premier League win of 2023 as goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo condemned Sean Dyche to a first defeat as Everton boss in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield.

Salah fired Liverpool into the lead as he finished a counter-attack just 17 seconds after Everton defender James Tarkowski hit the post at the other end.

And Gakpo doubled the Reds’ lead shortly after half time with his first Liverpool goal, finishing a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold at the back post.

Everton, who remain in the bottom three, barely threatened after going behind but Tom Davies missed a free header at the back post late on.

Jurgen Klopp’s side move above Chelsea into ninth in the Premier League table while Everton remain in trouble in the relegation zone ahead of a six-pointer against Leeds on Saturday.

Follow all the reaction from the Merseyside Derby below:

Liverpool 2-0 Everton

77 mins: Liverpool are moving one space up the ninth as it stands and if they win their next match too they could end up as high as sixth in just two outings.

This will be a fine victory if the Reds can get over the line. Everton have just been a little toothless tonight.

Mo Salah is on hand to bring the ball down but it drops over the back of his head and gets booted away by the Toffees.

65 mins: Sean Dyche’s decision to go with a target-man up front hasn’t worked tonight. Ellis Simms has barely been in the game and he’s taken off to make space for Demarai Gray.

Can he create something for Everton?

Liverpool 2-0 Everton

58 mins: Shot! Everton move the ball quickly from side to side and get men up the pitch. It comes to Alex Iwobi who’s allowed to turn just outside the box and rattles off a shot that lands straight in Alisson Becker’s arms.

Liverpool 2-0 Everton

55 mins: Close! Tarkowski gives the ball away to Jordan Henderson who plays it inside to Mo Salah. Salah carries it up to the edge of the box before passing it out wide to his captain.

Henderson seems torn between a shot and a cross, only succeeding in lifting the ball over the top of the crossbar.
