Intensity so important against Dyche's Everton - Klopp

Liverpool belatedly secured their first Premier League win of 2023 as goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo condemned Sean Dyche to a first defeat as Everton boss in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield.

Salah fired Liverpool into the lead as he finished a counter-attack just 17 seconds after Everton defender James Tarkowski hit the post at the other end.

And Gakpo doubled the Reds’ lead shortly after half time with his first Liverpool goal, finishing a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold at the back post.

Everton, who remain in the bottom three, barely threatened after going behind but Tom Davies missed a free header at the back post late on.

Jurgen Klopp’s side move above Chelsea into ninth in the Premier League table while Everton remain in trouble in the relegation zone ahead of a six-pointer against Leeds on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah’s fast-break turns Merseyside derby and lifts Liverpool’s mood

The 242nd Merseyside derby lasted some 95 minutes, including stoppage time, and was decided in 15 seconds. It was determined when James Tarkowski hit the post and Mohamed Salah sprinted away and scored 100 yards away, when the blueprint that brought Everton victory against Arsenal was inches from an action replay and when the Egyptian ended a host of waits.

He had not scored at Anfield in the Premier League since October. Liverpool had not struck anywhere in the top flight since 2 January. They had not won in the division in 2023. But for Everton, the shortest journey on the fixture list is often their hardest and, as they retreated across Stanley Park, it may have been having spurred Liverpool back into form. The margins can be narrow and, in a meeting of two sides who really need to score the first goal in a game, Everton were inches from doing so, but with a lead and confidence, Liverpool became buoyant and dominant.

There was a new element to victory, too: a Cody Gakpo goal. The Dutchman had neither scored nor assisted in his first six games and if a false start to his Liverpool career was more a consequence of the team’s failings than his own shortcomings, a tap-in felt a welcome development nonetheless. And yet, on a night when two of Liverpool’s front three scored and an increasingly rampant Salah threatened a brace, there was a case for saying the most telling contribution still came from Darwin Nunez, such was his barnstorming role in the opener. Liverpool could celebrate the parts played by a fourth and fifth forward, too: Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino made their comebacks as substitutes.

Tonight was Jürgen Klopp’s 250th win as Liverpool manager in all competitions.

It was his 414th game in charge of the Reds, reaching the milestone win quicker than any of the previous three managers to do so for the club (Paisley 448, Shankly 472 and Watson 539).

Liverpool fans vindicated by Champions League final report as mayor demands Uefa apology

Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram believes the publication of the independent report into the chaos at last season’s Champions League final vindicates fans.

Uefa commissioned a team led by Portuguese Dr Tiago Brandao Rodrigues to look into issues of dangerous congestion, supporters being attacked by locals and tear-gassed by police and the all-round operation at the Stade de France in May.

The now-published report lays the blame at the feet of Uefa and the French authorities.

“Uefa’s report vindicates what I and other fans have been saying all along: that is, it was the fans who averted a disaster and were clearly not to blame, whilst the organisers – Uefa and the French authorities – were really responsible,” said Rotheram.

Full-time: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

90+4 mins: There goes the final whistle. Liverpool close out the match and claim all three points. It’s their first league win since the turn of the year.

Their next match is a tricky one away at Newcastle but if they win that one too the Reds will be back in contention for a top four finish.

Everton remain in the bottom three. The euphoria of beating Arsenal has been evaporated at Anfield. Sean Dyche still has a lot of work to do to rescue his team from the drop.
